Software Engineering Lead

Job Description

The Software Engineering Lead role is responsible for the management of Emerald Publishing’s Software Engineering Capability, encompassing our existing bespoke software platform and expanding service & integration layer as well as the software engineers and testers providing this capability.

This role has overall responsibility for the quality of our software engineering solutions and the processes and teams we use to create and support it, as well as continual improvement to meet both our customer’s and businesses changing needs.

Day to day we’ll trust you to:   

  • Lead the Software Engineering Capability: Work to create a high-performance culture based on accountability and psychological safety. Ensure the team use software development practices and processes that result in predictable, frequent and timely delivery and improvements to our solutions.
  • Collaboration: Ensure the Software Engineering team is part of the business collaborating with colleagues in Product, Delivery and beyond. Actively share stories and successes to the wider organization through multiple communication channels.
  • Support our QA process: Work with our QA lead and team to support the continued evolution of our QA approach, embed best practice and increase coverage, reduce effort and improve speed of detection for testing across all our solutions.
  • Drive Quality: Work with key technology stakeholders to baseline and drive improvements in code, process and people to provide more predictable and resilient outcomes. Ensure our systems are evolving, automating wherever possible and minimising maintenance & technical debt. Make continuous improvement part of every process.
  • Resource Management: Assess the resource and skill requirements to deliver to business needs and design appropriate plans for internal teams and external partnerships to meet those needs. This includes partner account management, contracting and ongoing supplier management, as appropriate, to deliver the most appropriate resource to satisfy this business need.

You’ll need to have:   

  • Strong Software engineering background
  • Working knowledge of software QA / testing
  • Experience leading high performing, distributed software engineering teams
  • A fundamental understanding of the principles of software development and experience of the processes and skills for making it work in the real world
  • A delivery mindset that embraces and adapts to change
  • Proven experience of embedding continuous improvement
  • Understanding of DevOps principles including self-service tools, processes (including continuous integration, testing and delivery) and culture
  • Excellent communication skills, whether to the engineering team or to their stakeholders
  • Experience of Partner and Supplier management
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced, customer focused organization
