Commercial Underwriting at NFU Mutual
At NFU Mutual, our Commercial Underwriting division has a clear roadmap for digital development that supports our commercial growth objectives and opens exciting opportunities to contribute more value-added activities.
Our 280-strong team of dedicated commercial underwriting professionals work on a diverse portfolio of accounts, ranging from new business and development underwriting right through to renewals, mid-term adjustments, and onsite underwriting opportunities. They understand that effective underwriting involves not only assessing risk but also delivering underwriting solutions that support our customers ever-changing and evolving insurance needs. Our close partnership with the NFU Mutual Agency Network across the UK enhances our capacity, enabling us to serve our customers effectively and provide the right insurance solutions to protect their livelihoods. This distinctive aspect of our approach sets us apart from other insurers and is the cornerstone of our continued success.
Being a great place to work is at the heart of our company strategy, and while farming insurance remains a key priority, our focus is on commercial growth. By working in collaboration with our underwriting teams across the business and continually developing your skills, you could play a pivotal role in contributing to our future. Now is the time to join us.
About the role
We have several exciting Commercial Underwriter opportunities to join our SME and Mid-Market Team, where you’ll be responsible for handling commercial cases with up to £35,000 premiums, across Commercial Combined, Motor Trade and Farm. The team also underwrites all midterm alterations and renewal work for any case within these thresholds.
New commercial business is the SME and Mid-Market team’s biggest growth opportunity. These Commercial Underwriting roles are your chance to be an integral part of that growth, ensuring we take full advantage of every opportunity, helping us create a lasting impact on the General Insurance business at NFU Mutual.
At NFU mutual, we run a unique tied-Agent model and have over 200 agencies within our UK-wide NFU Mutual Agency Network. These agencies are the vital day-to-day link with our customers. A large part of your role will be to build strong relationships and work collaboratively with our agencies, helping them deliver the right solutions and a personal, high-quality service for our customers.
At its core, underwriting at NFU Mutual feels different because it’s designed to be. Our mutual structure means you’re not just working for a company – you're part of a shared purpose that values people, relationships, and long-term thinking. Our people stay because it’s a great place to work – and our customers stay because of the quality of the service we deliver.
Working hours: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday with shifts between 8am and 6pm.
When you join us, you’ll receive a comprehensive induction, and although we also offer flexible and hybrid working options, you’ll need to commit to being in the office more often for the first 6 months in the role. Following your induction, you’ll receive ongoing training to support personal growth and career progression opportunities.
To help you give your best in the office and at home, we’re also open to discussing what part-time hours might look like for you – just let us know when you apply!
About you

You’re also used to coaching, training and guiding colleagues on more complex risks, technical queries and customer service matters. Through this, you’ll help improve knowledge across the team and support confident, effective decision making.
At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.
