The Role

The Revenue Protection Officer is responsible for investigating, detecting, and deterring instances of theft of gas and abstraction of electricity by Residential or Business customers and making suitable arrangements for recovery and repayment. This will involve interrogating data leads and consumption trends prior to visiting our customer premises as well as highlighting the dangers of energy theft through presentations to Police, Local Authorities, and other relevant bodies as you build a network of contacts in your area.

Energy Theft is dangerous. Gas escapes and electrical contacts are a real risk, so you’ll need to have a methodical mind and great situational awareness to stay safe in the field. We provide substantial training, PPE, and support, however as the principal officer during all visits you’ll need to be comfortable managing the safety of others.

Due to the nature of Energy Theft visits you’ll need a calm mind and the ability to reason. Our RPOs are fully trained to recognise and de-escalate challenging scenarios

Accountabilities:

  • Visit Customer premises to investigate suspected instances of theft of gas and abstraction of electricity
  • Present findings to customers in professional, assured manner
  • Be a great ambassador of the company delivering exceptional customer service
  • Negotiate outcomes, with ability to communicate the process to the customer
  • Deal with first line complaints and escalate where necessary
  • Use networking skills to build and maintain strong working relationships with local engineers, the Police and Court staff, local authorities, and meter readers
  • Represent the company when required as a professional witness in court
  • Presenting facts clearly and with confidence

Safety:

  • Ensure the safety and environmental policies, guidelines and procedures are understood and deployed throughout the business.
  • Ensure safety first approach for yourself, your colleagues, and our customers
  • Ensure health and safety objectives and targets are met.
  • Effective networking with key Stakeholders across British Gas to increase the profile of the Revenue Protection Unit
  • Proactively manage relationships between British Gas, other industry organisations and local authorities
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with Revenue Protection Support Teams and other key internal and external stakeholders

Knowledge & Expertise:

  • Understanding and experience of the energy industry from a technical and commercial perspective
  • Understanding of the supply licence conditions relevant to theft of energy
  • The ability to identify theft of gas and abstraction of electricity situations
  • The ability to communicate effectively at differing levels & show empathy where required

To succeed in this role, you should:

  • Be a strong planner with great organisational skills
  • Comfortable dealing with conflict & shows great resilience
  • A Full UK Driving Licence is a necessity for this role
