Regulatory Manager - Consumer Regulation
British Gas maintains an excellent corporate and regulatory reputation within an industry under ever-increasing political, regulatory and consumer group scrutiny. To support our engagement with external regulatory and consumer bodies, we now seek a Regulatory Manager to help manage a wide range of issues and priorities for British Gas across the whole regulatory, social policy and consumer redress landscape.
Purpose of the role:
The Regulatory Affairs function understands, provides advice and influences the various regulatory components of the energy sector, so that Centrica businesses can work effectively within it
Within this function, this newly created role will manage a portfolio of retail regulatory issues, business partnering with (and advising) British Gas Energy
The role will focus on consumer regulation, consumer empowerment, protection and redress, providing expert advice and advocacy on all matters relating to consumer affairs and social policy (including vulnerability and fuel poverty)
The role will also manage Ofgem compliance queries
About the Role:
British Gas is committed to delivering a fair deal and exceptional customer service to all of our customers. You will play an integral role in delivering a wide range of social, strategic, regulatory and operational objectives across British Gas, both internally and externally.
Specifically, you will focus on consumer issues, right across our customer service and operational activities. You will support British Gas in formulating arguments and articulating positions on high value regulatory and social policy issues, across the domestic energy sector. You will communicate at all levels with a number of external parties, e.g. Ofgem, the Government, Citizens Advice, consumer groups, The Energy Ombudsman and NGOs, within the regulatory environment which we operate.
You will manage a portfolio of regulatory matters, arising in connection with Consumer Regulation, including:
Shaping the progression of key deliverables and objectives to support delivery of the business strategy and to protect the business from external risks and costs
Providing advocacy and representing British Gas in relevant external forums
Building strong relationships (and networks) with / advocating BG’s position across a number of key external stakeholders
Providing expert advice and support to internal stakeholders and ensuring that there is a good understanding of regulatory obligations and the current landscape
Contributing to the development of business strategy where it is concerned with the external regulatory landscape
Managing and mitigating the risk of ineffective or inefficient regulatory policy / intervention
Managing Ofgem compliance activities and resolution of compliance issues
Overseeing and managing the submission of accurate and timely regulatory reporting and information requests to Ofgem (and other regulatory bodies)
Developing and agreeing responses to consultations from Government, Ofgem and other statutory bodies
Ensuring the business has visibility of upcoming regulatory changes and support the timely implementation of those changes in a way which maximises commercial value and strategic alignment
About You:
Significant business-facing experience in a regulatory role or similar (inc. in compliance or regulatory operations)
Good understanding of the regulatory / licensing frameworks governing the GB energy market
A strong network of stakeholders and the ability to leverage those relationships to progress British Gas’ regulatory agenda
A detailed knowledge of GB’s retail consumer protection legislation – including the rights of redress and of the regulatory decision-making processes
A good knowledge of the Government’s social, welfare, fuel poverty and vulnerability policies
Working flexibly, across a wide range of high profile and fast moving tactical and strategic issues
Excellent written, verbal, presentation and reasoning skills
Ability to build constructive relationships at all levels of an organisation
Excellent team-working skills
Analytical and conceptual thinking skills
Comfortable in working across a matrix organisation and leading or participating in multi skilled teams
Effective at influencing industry stakeholders and negotiating multilateral consensus on key issues
Maintains a collaborative approach to provide timely, efficient and effective support to our stakeholders
