Main Purpose
To work with key stakeholders across internal business units to set the strategy and policies for British Gas. Maintain and continually improve a fully integrated management system to identify environmental aspects, reduce environmental impacts and drive sustainability throughout the company.
Working within the HSE Team, the Environmental and Sustainability Manager will ensure that British Gas is meeting all regulatory, legal and environmental reporting obligations.
The Environmental & Sustainability Manager will play a key role in developing and driving the Centrica People and Plant objectives within the organisation at all levels.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead Environment and Sustainability, develop and embed the strategy gaining the buy-in of key stakeholders at all levels including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
- Set and measure suitable, realistic, and SMART objectives for the business and ensure that appropriate action plans to achieve our goals are implemented in line with the HSE Strategy.
- Develop, implement, and maintain suitable environmental management systems, policies, procedures, and guidance which help reduce risk and ensure legal compliance.
- Ensure readiness for external reporting requirements.
- Support and work closely with key stakeholders in developing, reviewing and achieving environmental and sustainability objectives and targets, promoting continuous improvement and development throughout.
- Develop creative strategies and action plans which support the achievement of KPIs, always encouraging best practice.
- Collate and analyse environmental performance data, produce reports, and identify areas for improvement.
- Produce Environment and Sustainability report’s with input from key stakeholders across the business.
- Build effective working relationships with key stakeholders ensuring appropriate support, advice and assistance is offered on environment and sustainability matters; ensure that any necessary remedial actions are implemented appropriately.
- Work with the wider HSE team to support and lead relevant and applicable third-party audits and accreditations, i.e. ISO 14001.
- Where appropriate, take an active role in ensuring that environmental incidents are investigated, and suitable lessons learnt/actions are captured and communicated appropriately to prevent any reoccurrences. Liaise with any insurance/ legal third parties as necessary.
- Ensure that all staff receive appropriately training and guidance. This includes the development and delivery of training as appropriate.
- To be individually responsible for professional and personal development. This will include but not be limited to; appropriate internal and external research and learning, conferences and short courses.
- Keep up to date with all relevant environmental legislation including guidance and industry best practice and that such knowledge is shared and embedded within the business.
- Liaise with relevant external bodies including regulatory bodies.
- Contribute to improving the business, protecting and enhancing the reputation of the Company, by putting forward new ideas and, when requested to do so, implementing change.
- Develop and provide reports to the SESC, HSE Governance Meetings and Committee’s, support reporting to the Board’s.
- Undertake statistical data reviews to identify common trends and produce suitable reports and advise on corrective actions.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Relevant experience in managing environmental and sustainability challenges at a senior level.
- Broad knowledge of corporate approaches to sustainability.
- Proven track record in a similar field in a large-scale organisation
- Experience of leading change projects
- Strong self-drive and resilience to overcome challenges and deliver results
- Relevant experience of building a strong and consistent culture of exemplary environmental and sustainability throughout an organisation.
Education and Certifications
- BSc (Hons) Environmental Management and Sustainability or equivalent required
- Auditor qualification preferred (ISO 14001)
- MIEMA (or actively working towards)
- Evidence of current CPD for E&S
