About the role

As part of a broad portfolio of global activity, BMT are a prestigious Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering design consultancy providing a wide range of services for advanced and specialised ships and boats, from initial concept through to detailed design and production. The company has an established background in commercial vessels, naval vessels and yachts, with significant experience across all hull types, propulsion systems and structural materials. The Chief Marine Engineer (Commercial) provides technical leadership to teams within the assigned capabilities of production engineering and marine engineering within the commercial sector. Alongside the Chief Naval Architecture (Commercial), the role will provide senior technical guidance and assurance to the commercial vessel design team, The role promotes leadership at every level, and involves line management, coaching/ mentoring and support to training. The role champions the company culture and underlying team structure within the assigned disciplines.

The Chief Marine Engineer (Commercial) is responsible for the delivery and oversight of the technical scope of work for projects within the commercial vessel design team. The role carries responsibility for the technical approach and output to ensure that it meets the requirements, that it is fit for purpose, safe and delivered to a high level of quality whilst minimising risk and liability to the business. The role acts as a senior point of contact for the customer on technical issues. In addition, in combination with the Business Development and Sales functions, the role is responsible for developing new opportunities. A key element of being able to deliver these responsibilities will be liaison with the key enabling functions within BMT for Commercial, Governance and Financial aspects.

The Chief Marine Engineer (Commercial) will also act as the capability lead for the commercial area as part of the wider capability discipline and will work with the capability manager to develop and manage a capability plan around that area of the business. Working with resource managers and Heads of Programmes will be essential to support utilisation targets.

The role supports and develops new ideas, designs and ways of working as part of the company’s ongoing investment in R&D and continuous improvement. The role involves promoting BMT externally through writing papers, delivering presentations and attending industry forums.

This role is located in BMT’s office in Southampton.

About you

You will be a highly experienced marine professional, degree qualified in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or similar, with a minimum of 10 years relevant experience in the marine industry and Chartered Status with a relevant Institute. A technical expert with significant experience in a wide range of design activity (ideally with a bias towards lightweight aluminium, medium to high-speed craft and conceptual and detailed design of vessels that are similar to the commercial vessels produced by BMT such as Crew Transfer Vessels, patrol boats, ferries, workboats etc) you will also be experienced with relevant codes of practice and Classification Society rules and have practical experience in vessel construction.

You will be involved with vessel design enquiries, the development of new technologies to meet them and can be expected to engage actively in business development activities. You will promote BMT externally through writing papers, delivering presentations and attending industry forums. The commercial vessel design team is highly dynamic and you will interact closely with colleagues responsible for Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Outfit Engineering and Production Design.

You will have demonstrable management experience and interpersonal skills that allow you to engage with customers, stakeholders and your own team, whether face to face or remotely. An excellent written and verbal communicator, you will be experienced in guiding and supporting colleagues, including checking work to be in accordance with quality standards and regulatory requirements. A key part of the role will be ensuring that the strengths of the commercial vessel design team are maintained and strategically developed to suit the company’s needs and business strategy. You will be detail focussed and experienced in successful workload planning.
