Your next exciting job opportunity –

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Principal / Principal Scientist to join our team. As an Associate Principal / Principal Scientist, you will be responsible for undertaking scientific and technical tasks of advanced scope and complexity. You will collaborate with other business leaders to share knowledge and advance our business, acting as a Project Manager for large and/or complex projects. The successful candidate will deliver successful projects, maintain our brand reputation for superior quality technical work, and ensure a high level of customer focus.

In this role you will be able to:

  • Undertake or support the planning and implementation of field-based collection, analysis, and reporting of marine, estuarine, and freshwater environmental studies.
  • Act as a technical specialist and expert in applying advanced concepts, principles, and methods in the environmental sciences.
  • Provide technical advice to management and business units, offering guidance on equipment or material usage.
  • Supervise and review the work of engineers, scientists, designers/drafters, and technicians.
  • Share knowledge and act as a mentor within your area of expertise or across the business.
  • Demonstrate analytical and innovative problem-solving skills to adapt and find solutions in challenging situations.
  • Adhere to and actively promote quality, safety, and environmental procedures/standards.
  • Liaise with clients for service delivery, networking, and business development purposes.
  • Collaborate with service providers to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Act as a Project Manager for various projects, managing scope, time, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Contribute to thought leadership activities through your work, authoring papers, and presenting at events, seminars, and conferences.
  • Maintain professional registrations and certifications, as required.
  • Perform specific tasks related to budget estimates, field work planning, environmental surveys, data analysis and reporting, review of scientific reports, and maintaining records.

Relevant Education, Experience, and Skills:


  • Postgraduate degree (Honours, Masters, PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience post-graduation.
  • Experience working within a multi-site organisation in a relevant industry.
  • Strong organisational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a focus on delivering high-quality work.
  • Client-focused and commercially aware.
  • Working knowledge of marine, estuarine, and freshwater flora and fauna in northern and eastern Australia, including identification of common marine plants and fish species, and major benthic flora and fauna groups.
  • Experience working within the scientific, engineering, or resources sector.


  • Commercial diving accreditation (ADAS 1).
  • Willingness to undertake field work in remote areas, including the Pacific, northern Australia, and PNG regions, occasionally for extended periods of time (up to several weeks).
  • Experience using AusRivAS sampling and analysis methodology.
  • Experience conducting electrofishing (boat-based and/or back-pack).
  • Relevant registration with recognized science/engineering/environmental body.
  • Experience conducting univariate and multivariate statistical analysis.
  • First aid certificate.
  • Off-road vehicle experience.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Excel and statistical packages (e.g., R, Primer).
  • Some proficiency in GIS (MapInfo, QGIS, or ArcGIS).
  • Experience working within a multi-site organization.
