Job Description

Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Staff Software Engineer to join our scientific and medical device software development team. You will be responsible for leading software engineers to plan, build, integrate, test, and deliver software capabilities across a portfolio of software subsystems. This role combines hands-on technical leadership, people leadership, and execution accountability. You will work closely with software architects, product management, systems engineering, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, program management, and remote software teams to ensure the final product meets user needs, business objectives, quality standards, schedule commitments, and applicable medical device regulatory requirements. You will be a mentor for the team, a bridge across software and cross-functional teams, and a practicing engineer who remains engaged in design reviews, code reviews, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making.

The Senior Staff Software Engineer brings a strong problem-solving mindset, with the ability to analyze ambiguous technical and execution challenges, identify practical options, drive decisions, and follow through to resolution. They will demonstrate strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with an action-oriented focus on quality, delivery, and results. The ideal candidate will be naturally curious and customer-oriented; consistently seeking to learn how customers work, how our technology functions, and how engineering decisions translate into better user outcomes. To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate the ability to communicate, collaborate, mentor, influence, and drive alignment across local, remote, and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead software engineers to deliver high-quality software for scientific and medical device platforms.

  • Own end-to-end software delivery plans, milestones, risks, dependencies, and execution roadmaps for assigned software domains.

  • Drive feature execution from concept through release, ensuring commitments are delivered with high quality and on schedule.

  • Partner with subsystem architects to ensure delivery plans and implementation strategies align with architecture, product roadmaps, and long-term technical direction.

  • Participate in software design reviews, architecture discussions, code reviews, debugging, root-cause analysis, and technical decision-making.

  • Collaborate with product management, systems engineering, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, program management, and other software teams to ensure requirements are clear, complete, verifiable, and aligned with user needs.

  • Coordinate and communicate with remote and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment, integration, and release readiness.

  • Mentor, coach, and develop software engineers; support goal setting, performance feedback, hiring, onboarding, and talent development.

  • Champion software engineering best practices include design patterns, coding standards, automated testing, CI/CD, design reviews, observability, and maintainability.

  • Ensure software is developed in accordance with applicable medical device quality systems, regulatory expectations, and industry best practices.

  • Continuously improve engineering efficiency, predictability, software quality, and team effectiveness.

Minimum Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related technical field.

  • 10 years of professional software development experience.

  • 5 years of technical leadership experience leading complex software initiatives from concept through release.

  • 3 years of people leadership or engineering management experience.

  • Deep understanding of software architecture, design patterns, distributed systems, data structures, algorithms, and modern engineering practices.

  • Strong software design and coding skills with modern object-oriented programming languages.

Preferred Skills/Knowledge

  • Master’s degree.

  • Software development experience in scientific, medical device, life sciences, laboratory automation, or instrumentation software.

  • Specific programming language experience with C#/.NET

  • Experience working in regulated environments and applying medical device quality systems, and regulatory expectations such as FDA, ISO 13485, or IEC 62304.
