Job Title: Senior Radiation Physicist

Location: Barrow-in-Furness. This role will require a minimum of 3 days on site weekly

What you’ll be doing:

  • You will be responsible for conducting radiological safety assessments and evaluating radiation damage risks to onboard electronics
  • You will be supporting radiation transport modelling using point kernel and Monte Carlo calculations
  • You will develop radiation detection systems and manage systems engineering designs of secondary shielding
  • You will be required to provide technical guidance on design changes or defects to maintain safety standards
  • You will be developing ALARP justifications to support with engineering decisions and ensuring that radiological risks are minimised to compliant and acceptable levels

Core duties:

  • You will need to hold a degree in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Nuclear Science, or a related field
  • You will possess demonstrable knowledge and/or experience of radiation physics, nuclear engineering, nuclear safety or similar
  • You are required to have knowledge and/or experience of Radiological safety assessments, ALARP justifications or similar
  • You will need to utilise your knowledge and/or experience of radiation transport methods (ATTILLA/MCBEND/MCNP etc.)

The Radiation Physics & Shielding team:

Our team designs and validates radiation shielding for the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet across three major programmes. We handle shield design, build assessments, metrology, and safety studies, while developing novel detectors and electronics capability. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
