Location: Barrow-in-Furness, hybrid

We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: Up to £42,750, dependent on experience

Who we are:

Join BAE Systems and you’ll be part of something bigger. As a valued member of our global colleague network, you’ll bring your unique skills and perspectives to help pioneer progress and protect what matters most. You’ll be trusted to play your part in delivering advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions, shaping a safer future for all of us. From the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of space, there’s no limit to where a career at BAE Systems could take you.

What you will be doing:

As a Senior Commissioning Engineer – Mechanical, you’ll play a key role in delivering the testing and commissioning of mechanical systems on the Dreadnought submarine programme. Working within a high-risk engineering environment, you’ll be responsible for producing and reviewing technical documentation, ensuring commissioning activities are carried out safely and in compliance with relevant standards and legislation. You’ll collaborate with engineering teams, the Royal Navy, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Build Operations, while sharing your knowledge and mentoring less experienced colleagues to support the successful delivery of complex submarine systems.

Core duties:

  • Safely carry out routine commissioning activities with limited supervision, understanding the safety implications of working in a high-risk environment
  • Generate Test and Commissioning documentation for mechanical systems
  • Liaise with Engineering, the Royal Navy, the MoD and Build Operations to ensure activities are completed safely and in compliance with relevant requirements
  • Instruct and mentor less experienced team members within your knowledge and competency
  • Research, author and review design and test documentation to the required standards
  • Deliver assigned activities in accordance with company policies, procedures and applicable legislation

Essential Skills:

  • HNC in Mechanical Engineering
  • Knowledge of mechanical system operation, ideally including hydraulic systems, pressurised air and gas, domestic and chilled water systems, and tank testing
  • Experience commissioning complex systems and plant
  • Knowledge of test equipment and the activities required to carry out specific tests
  • Understanding of mechanical flushing, pressure and endurance testing, and setting systems to work
  • Knowledge of safety controls and procedures within a high-risk engineering environment

The Tech Cell Mechanical Team:

As part of the Tech Cell Mechanical team, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a first-in-class submarine through the Dreadnought project, one of the UK’s biggest and most complex engineering programmes. You’ll contribute directly to the testing and commissioning of critical mechanical systems, helping ensure they meet the required safety, performance and compliance standards. This is an opportunity to apply your technical expertise to a nationally significant programme while developing your skills and supporting the growth of others within the team. We offer relocation support across Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.

A place where everyone can thrive:

We’re committed to building an inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued and supported. We welcome applications from all suitably qualified people and encourage discussion of reasonable adjustments where needed.

Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to security and export control restrictions. Applicants must meet Baseline Personnel Security Standard, and many roles require higher levels of National Security Vetting, including 5–10 years continuous UK residency depending on the role.

Why BAE Systems?

Here you’ll build a career with purpose and limitless possibilities. Lifelong learning, meaningful work, and a supportive culture enable you to grow with confidence. You’ll be recognised for your contribution and supported with rewards that matter most to you.

Closing Date: 3rd November 2026
