Job Description

Job Title: Principal Engineer – Product Verification

Location: Barrow-in-Furness. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: From £45,628 dependant on skills and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Ensure build and design intent conformity through verification activities including audits, witnessing key events and build surveillance, at system and whole boat level for Structures, Hull and Outfit or Submarine Systems (Mechanical)
  • Producing and owning a risk-based project plan to manage assurance activities and conducting targeted and patrol inspections with the support of drawings, design specifications, workmanship standards and other relevant documentation
  • Supporting activities regarding configuration management and change embodiment and the review of concessions impacting design intent in build
  • Collaborating across functions (Engineering, Operations, Quality etc) and with the Dreadnought Alliance to ensure design intent is met
  • Reporting and presenting issues on weekly basis in meetings and at various levels within the business
  • Assess build maturity against design in support of various key build stage and hold points along with presenting and providing statements for these

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Degree qualified in Engineering (or working towards), or HNC with suitable experience
  • Technical experience in Safety Assessments of design, evidence capture and risk analysis
  • Experience working to and understanding technical standards such as ISO, DefStan, technical drawings and documentation
  • Thorough knowledge of the engineering lifecycle and be able to apply good practices to your work

Desirable:

  • Experience conducting technical investigations or audits
  • Engineering Chartership or working towards
  • Experience with Submarine/Maritime Structures or Submarine Systems (Mechanical)
  • Demonstrable and applied experience in Engineering Assurance or verification activities for build and commissioning activities
  • Knowledge of Maritime build and/or operation

The Product Verification team:

We currently have two exciting Principal Engineer opportunities available within our Submarines business: one focused on Structures and the other on Submarine Systems.

As a Principal Engineer, you will play a key role in ensuring product design intent across Build, Test, and Commissioning phases. You will also act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in product verification—leading assurance activities within your respective discipline.

This unique opportunity will enable you to contribute to one of the UK’s most complex and cutting-edge projects, with involvement across the entire submarine platform.
