Job Description

Job title: Principal C&I Systems Engineer

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton, and Portsmouth. (Minimum requirement of 2 days on site per fortnight). We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Developing a C&I functional design for complex propulsion, mechanical and electrical systems
  • Specifying instrumentation that is fit for purpose and meets specified functionality
  • Analysing compliance against non-functional stakeholders (EMC, Shock, Metallics etc.)
  • Undertaking/Leading technical design reviews for C&I
  • Managing system design maturity to meet programme demands
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders such as inter-business teams, MOD & industrial partners

Your skills and experiences:


  • Demonstrable experience of C&I Design & Development
  • Significant experience producing and communicating design artefacts relating to C&I systems
  • Experience developing solutions to meet complex technical requirements in a highly regulated industry/environment
  • Familiarity with functional; safety; defence standards, British standards, naval standards, and /or nuclear standards
  • STEM Degree or equivalent qualification and experience within an engineering background


  • Obtained or capable of obtaining relevant Professional Registration (CEng)

The Control and Instrumentation Teams:

This is a dynamic, multi-functional team working at the start of the biggest Defence project of its kind. In this role, you will be responsible for delivering the C&I solution that make the UK Royal Navy Submarines truly world class, ensuring that we deliver an effective Royal Navy capability and a platform that ensures the safety of its crew.
