About the OPPORTUNITY

We have an exciting opportunity for an Outfit Engineer to join our Hunter Class line of business based at SA-Osborne Naval Shipyard, reporting to the Lead Outfit Engineer.

We embrace flexible work arrangements at BAE Systems Australia, such as working a 9-day fortnight.

As the Outfit Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the design, modification, and integration of outfit systems and components for the Hunter Class Frigate Program. This includes working closely with internal teams and external suppliers to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective outfit solutions that align with project objectives.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Apply knowledge of company products, services, and outfit engineering principles to resolve engineering challenges while adhering to established processes and governance.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of outfit solutions, including conducting analyses and supporting manufacturing, integration, and validation activities for outfit systems and equipment (such as accommodation, furnishings, insulation, and other non-structural ship elements).
  • Assist in the preparation and review of detailed designs for outfit equipment and spaces to meet architectural requirements and project needs.
  • Provide evidence for fitness for purpose, regulatory compliance, safety, and quality assurance, ensuring robust documentation supports the adequacy of outfit designs.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues throughout the product lifecycle and manage associated change embodiment activities for outfit systems and components.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure outfit requirements are supported and appropriately incorporated.
  • Provide realistic programme status updates, identify issues, and implement recovery plans to meet project objectives for outfit deliverables.
  • Liaise with suppliers based around the world on the technical aspects of outfit procurement packages.
  • Conduct outfit system design and integration, including the translation of customer requirements into functionally compliant outfit designs.

About YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Mechatronic, Aeronautical Engineering, or a related field. While you may not currently hold the qualifications required for Engineers Australia membership, we still encourage you to apply.
  • Eligible for membership with the Institute of Engineers Australia (IEAust).
  • Proven experience working as a professional engineer, ideally with exposure to outfit engineering or outfitting in naval or marine environments.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to project personnel.
  • Ability to work confidently and collaboratively within a project team environment.
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to completing assigned tasks.
  • Effective collaboration with designers, draftspersons, production teams, suppliers, and other engineers, particularly regarding outfit systems and components.

We believe in hiring for potential, we know that some candidates hesitate if they don’t tick all the boxes. If this role interests you, but you don’t meet all the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.
