Job Title: Engineering Manager – Mechanical Engineering (Ocean Interfaces)

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Hybrid

What you will be doing:

In this role, you will play a pivotal leadership role within the Ocean Interfaces engineering function, shaping both technical direction and team capability. You will lead and mentor a high-performing team while working closely with senior leadership to deliver complex platform systems.

You will oversee the development of design solutions aligned to time, cost and quality targets, ensuring engineering activities are effectively governed and coordinated. The role also focuses on developing engineering talent, strengthening technical capability, and fostering a culture of excellence.

You will support the definition of system performance and contractual requirements, ensuring these are translated into robust acceptance criteria throughout design, build, integration, installation and commissioning.

Core duties:

  • Lead teams to develop design solutions in line with project and business milestones
  • Define and manage system performance and contractual requirements, including acceptance criteria
  • Oversee production of design documentation such as diagrams, specifications, calculations and technical justifications
  • Ensure design proving and contractual evidence is complete, captured and appropriately approved
  • Undertake technical discussions and presentations with customers, partners and suppliers (UK and international)
  • Review and approve team and supplier outputs to ensure quality, accuracy and compliance
  • Lead people management activities including coaching, development, goal setting and performance reviews
  • Promote best practice, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement across the team

Your skills and experience:

  • Demonstrable submarine domain knowledge
  • Experience delivering mechanical systems across the full engineering lifecycle
  • Strong background in applying technical expertise within complex engineering environments
  • Experience specifying mechanical equipment and components
  • Degree qualified (BEng (Hons) / MEng or equivalent) in a relevant STEM discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards achieving it

The Ocean Interfaces Team:

The Ocean Interfaces team sits at the heart of complex platform delivery, supporting the integration of critical mechanical systems. As Engineering Manager, you will provide day-to-day leadership of team leads while working in partnership with the Senior Engineering Manager.

The team has a strong focus on capability development, technical excellence and effective programme delivery. You will contribute to strategic planning and execution, ensuring engineering activities align with wider programme objectives. Relocation support packages are available across all Submarines roles, subject to eligibility criteria.
