Job Description

Job Title: Deputy Project Engineering Manager

Location: Portsmouth Broad Oak

Salary: Circa £60,000 (dependent on skills and experience)

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supporting the engineering management of a multi‑disciplinary team of engineers and support staff to deliver system upgrades/updates, in‑service support across multiple contracts, and the development of MIMESIS all in line with Programme milestones, Programme budgets, and BAE Systems engineering policies and processes
  • Maintain and update management plans related to engineering on the projects/contracts
  • Prepare/review engineering estimates and schedules relating to engineering developments and bids
  • Oversee project tracking and provide monthly schedule updates
  • Support the Engineering Manager to ensure that activities are adequately resourced to achieve the Programme in the most cost-effective manner
  • Develop and maintain a set of relevant engineering metrics, measurements and analysis
  • Provide support to the Project Manager for the identification of risks and subsequent analysis
  • Reporting Engineering status/issues at P&TS governance meetings
  • Ensure the overarching strategic intent of Maritime Services is followed and applied

Your skills and experiences:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent field
  • A sound knowledge of complex software development and integration, together with some knowledge of IT systems development engineering principles
  • Proven experience in leading the design, development, and delivery of software engineering solutions
  • Some knowledge and understanding of the Naval equipment and training domain is desirable
  • Some understanding of future technologies that could be applied to training solutions is advantageous
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or working towards it is desirable
  • Some knowledge of hardware and electrical engineering principles/issues/regulatory requirements relevant to simulators is desirable

The MIMESIS team:

MIMESIS provides a battlespace simulation of the maritime world; from terrain and seabed to weather and underwater acoustics, accurately modelling the movement and behaviour of ships, submarines and other platforms, and digitally replicating their unique capabilities (sonars, radars, weapons)

As a Deputy Project Engineering Manager, you will play a key part in coordinating the engineering development activities for the MIMESIS programme, ensuring delivery to agreed cost, schedule and quality targets, and maintaining full compliance with BAE Systems’ engineering policies and processes

You will work closely with work‑package leads to support the day‑to‑day management of software and systems engineering teams, helping to drive effective collaboration and technical progress. Additionally, you will contribute to estimating, forecasting, tracking and reporting engineering progress, providing clear and timely updates to the Project Manager and Simulation & Training internal projects
