Job Description

APM Terminals

At APM Terminals Panama, we do not just operate a port, we power the heartbeat of global commerce. Positioned at one of the world's most strategic maritime gateways, our terminal is a critical link connecting continents, industries, and millions of people every day.

Every container we move carries more than cargo. It carries opportunity, growth, and progress. Joining APM Terminals Panama means becoming part of a high-performing, supportive, and people-first environment where collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence drive everything we do.

Why you'll love it here

  • Every move we make connects businesses, communities, and countries.
  • From quay cranes to control towers, no two days are the same.
  • We continuously improve how we operate, embracing digitalization, safety, and smarter ways of working.
  • Continuous improvement mindset – where curiosity is encouraged, root-cause problem solving is valued, and making things better every day is part of how we win.

At APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations, we enable global trade and drive sustainable growth. As part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, we connect economies and communities worldwide. Our success is driven by a strong commitment to LEAN methodologies, embedding continuous improvement into every aspect of our operations. Join us and be part of a team that values excellence, collaboration, and innovation.

We are looking for a Senior HSE Business Partner to help shape and strengthen Health, Safety, and Environment performance across our terminals throughout the Americas. This role is based in Panama and offers the opportunity to travel extensively across North America, Latin America, and South America while partnering closely with terminal leaders and operational teams.

This position is ideal for someone who combines deep HSE expertise with strong business partnering capabilities. The successful candidate will thrive in operational environments, enjoy working closely with frontline teams, and be passionate about helping leaders create safer, more resilient workplaces.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with regional and terminal leadership teams to improve HSE performance across the Americas.
  • Support the development and execution of regional HSE improvement plans aligned with strategic priorities and operational risks.
  • Monitor HSE trends, identify emerging risks, and provide insights that support decision-making.
  • Drive accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the region.
  • Support the implementation of the HSE Strategy and HSE Management Framework.
  • Coordinate the investigation, learning, and closure of high-severity incidents.
  • Coach and influence leaders to strengthen ownership of HSE performance.
  • Support due diligence activities for new terminal projects and business growth opportunities.
  • Develop HSE talent through coaching, mentoring, succession planning, and capability-building initiatives.
  • Lead or contribute to regional and global HSE improvement projects.
  • Promote organizational learning, knowledge sharing, and the implementation of best practices across terminals.

What We Are Looking For

  • Significant experience in senior HSE, operational risk management, or business partnering roles.
  • Experience within ports, terminals, maritime operations, shipping, logistics, or other complex operational industries.
  • Strong ability to build trust and influence stakeholders without relying on hierarchy.
  • Proven experience coaching leaders and developing high-performing teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to navigate complexity and manage multiple priorities across different countries and cultures.
  • Comfortable working independently while collaborating across a global organization.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently throughout the Americas.
  • Lean-minded: we are looking for someone who brings a strong mindset of continuous improvement – someone who is naturally curious, committed to solving problems at the root, and driven to make things better every day.

Qualifications

  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent qualification in HSE, Risk Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in the ports and terminals industry is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of LEAN, continuous improvement methodologies, and/or Training Within Industry (TWI) is considered an advantage.
  • Strong English and Spanish communication skills, both written and spoken.

What We Can Offer

At APM Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and development culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence creates an environment where people can grow, contribute, and make a meaningful impact.

  • Regional exposure across a diverse network of terminals throughout the Americas.
  • Opportunities to work alongside senior leaders and influence strategic decisions.
  • A collaborative and inclusive culture that values different perspectives.
  • Ongoing learning, development, and career growth opportunities.
  • Exposure to global best practices in safety, operational excellence, and leadership.
  • The opportunity to make a tangible impact on how HSE is led across one of the world's largest port and terminal networks.

Join us as we continue to shape the future of global trade and make a meaningful impact on communities worldwide. Discover your potential with APM Terminals and become part of a team that's redefining industry standards while helping create safer, stronger, and more resilient operations across the Americas.
