Rijeka Gateway d.o.o. (RGW) — a joint venture between APM Terminals and ENNA Logic — is a modern container terminal and one of the most important logistics hubs for regional and international cargo flows. As part of a global logistics network, RGW continuously develops high standards of operational excellence, risk management, safety, and sustainability.

In line with our ongoing business growth, we are seeking an experienced and strategically minded HSSE Manager to take a leading role in managing HSSE across the terminal and to actively contribute to key business decisions as a member of the senior management team.

Your Role

As the HSSE Manager, you will be responsible for shaping, implementing, and continuously improving the terminal-wide HSSE strategy, while ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and global standards.

This role has a significant impact on:

  • the safety of employees and contractors
  • the continuity and reliability of operations
  • the management of operational and regulatory risks
  • the development of a safety- and accountability-driven organizational culture

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Management

  • Define and implement a comprehensive HSSE strategy aligned with global standards and business objectives
  • Actively participate in senior management discussions and strategic decision-making
  • Advise the Management Board on regulatory changes, operational risks, and HSSE-related matters
  • Manage the HSSE budget and define key performance indicators (KPIs)

Risk and Safety Management

  • Establish and continuously improve risk and incident management systems
  • Identify critical risks and implement and monitor the effectiveness of control measures
  • Lead incident investigations and define corrective and preventive actions
  • Ensure a high level of emergency preparedness

Compliance and Regulatory Framework

  • Ensure full compliance with national legislation and international standards
  • Manage relationships with relevant authorities, inspections, and regulatory bodies
  • Organize and lead internal and external audits and inspections

Operational Excellence and Safety Culture

  • Integrate HSSE principles into daily operational decision-making
  • Develop and implement training, education, and awareness programs
  • Foster a culture where safety, accountability, and prevention are integral to everyday operations
  • Manage HSSE requirements for contractors and suppliers

Team Leadership

  • Lead, develop, and mentor the HSSE team
  • Set clear goals and ensure high team performance
  • Promote continuous professional development and a culture of accountability

Organizational Context

  • Reports directly to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
  • Member of the terminal’s senior management team
  • Leads: HSSE department and team (Security Manager, Environmental Specialist, HSSE Specialists)
  • Collaborates closely with global and regional HSSE structures

Candidate Profile

Experience

  • Minimum 5–10 years of experience in senior HSSE roles
  • Experience in complex industrial environments (preferred: ports, logistics, energy, manufacturing)
  • Proven track record in team leadership and strategic decision-making
  • Experience working with regulatory bodies, audits, and inspections

Education and Certifications

  • University degree (Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field)
  • NEBOSH certification or equivalent (preferred)
  • Additional qualifications in risk management or environmental management are an advantage

  • Proficient in both English and Croatian
