Design and deliver software that truly matters.

As a Senior Software Engineer at Anglian Water, you’ll be a technical leader and mentor, helping shape the design, development, and evolution of high-quality software products and platforms. You’ll work closely with product owners, designers, and engineers to deliver secure, scalable solutions that meet customer needs and business goals.

You’ll lead through influence—supporting and enabling teams with technical guidance, promoting autonomy, and driving engineering excellence. With a strong focus on clean code, robust architecture, performance, and reliability, you’ll tackle complex challenges and help set technical direction.

This role combines hands-on engineering with collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning, giving you the opportunity to make a real impact while helping others grow.

What you’ll be doing

The Senior Software Engineer will design, build, and maintain high-quality software solutions that support Anglian Water’s products and platforms. They will work closely with product owners, designers, architects, and engineers to shape requirements, influence architecture and design decisions, and deliver secure, scalable, and reliable systems.

The role combines hands-on engineering with technical leadership. You’ll write clean, efficient code, review and improve existing solutions, troubleshoot production issues, and optimise performance, while also setting standards, promoting best practices, and mentoring other engineers. Collaboration, code quality, and maintainability will be central to everything you do.

You’ll continuously develop your own skills, explore new technologies, and contribute innovative ideas to improve how software is built and delivered. Through problem-solving, knowledge sharing, and a strong focus on quality, you’ll help raise engineering standards and support the ongoing evolution of Anglian Water’s digital capability.

What does it take to be a Senior Software Engineer?

We’re looking for a confident and collaborative Senior Software Engineer who communicates clearly and can effectively advocate for ideas and solutions with both technical and non-technical audiences. You’ll bring strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to get to the root of complex issues and deliver pragmatic solutions.

You’ll work well as part of a team, building strong relationships and collaborating effectively across disciplines, while also being comfortable taking ownership and operating independently in ambiguous or fast-moving environments. A working knowledge of service management processes, including change, incident, and problem management, will help you support resilient, well-run systems.

Experience or understanding of water industry standards and regulations is advantageous, along with a mindset that values adaptability, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Skills and experience:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field OR equivalent professional experience.

  • Recognised certification in relevant competency

  • Experience working cross functionally with both internal and external teams

  • Experience identifying and supporting delivery of both technical and process improvements in a digital engineering environment

  • Proven technical leadership experience, focused on training, mentoring, and coaching engineers

  • The ability to lead by example, demonstrating a strong work ethic, technical skills and problem solving abilities.

  • Experience working in an agile development team, where you’ve delivered incremental small slices, and are comfortable with responding to meet user needs

  • Demonstrable extensive experience in Software Engineering, with a strong track record of supporting delivery of complex projects and driving technical innovation.

  • Advanced proficiency in query language(s) (e.g. SQL) and large databases, along with industry best practices.

  • Advanced knowledge of a programming language (examples include: Javascript, HTML, CSS, C#, YAML, Python, PowerShell, JSON and BICEP)

  • Advanced proficiency in a programming language, specifically for data manipulation, (examples include: Python, R, Scala)

  • Experience working with Service Management processes, specifically Change, Incident, Event, Configuration and Problem Management

What’s in it for you?

  • Private healthcare and physiotherapy

  • 24-hour Virtual GP service for you and your household

  • 26 days annual leave (rising with service)

  • Competitive pension scheme – Anglian Water double-matches your contributions up to 6% (up to 18% combined)

  • Bonus scheme

  • Flexible benefits and working culture

  • Life Assurance (8× salary) and Personal Accident cover

  • Enhanced family leave policies

  • Great discounts and perks

Why apply?

This is an opportunity to work on software that really matters. At Anglian Water, the systems you build help deliver essential services, support critical infrastructure, and improve outcomes for customers and communities.

You’ll work in collaborative, product-led teams using modern engineering practices, where your ideas and technical leadership will genuinely shape solutions. As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll have the chance to influence architecture and standards, mentor others, and raise the bar for engineering quality across teams.

The role offers space to grow—through continuous learning, exposure to new technologies, and involvement in complex, meaningful problems—while working in an environment that values autonomy, collaboration, and innovation.
