Product Owner - Methods & Tools
Team: Airbus India - Engineering Methods & Tools
Experience: 7-10 years
About the team:
We are a transverse team working with different core engineering verticals in Airbus. The USP of this team is working in a multi-functional environment providing digital solutions to engineering problems. The team is composed of people with Core Engineering domain knowledge complemented by software development skills. The team plays an enabler role in various digitization initiatives across Airbus utilizing the latest technologies and the domain knowledge they have.
Some examples of the digital solutions are Data driven designs of wiring, Automated routing electrical harnesses, Data Analytics based products aimed at reducing physical tests of material specimens. We are also involved in developing web-based solutions to encapsulate and automate different workflows such as flight test planning, business management etc. In addition to these, developing tools for Electrical Wiring Harness and Hydraulic Circuit design process improvements. Some of the tools developed are used in the areas of Aircraft Safety analysis and Engineering Business Data monitoring etc.
M&T is also deeply involved in Agile Scrum and SAFe processes in developing state of the art digital products for the areas mentioned above.
Roles & Responsibilities:
1. Agile & Product Ownership Competencies (Core SAFe PO/PM)
- Strong experience working in Agile (SAFe preferred) as Product Owner or equivalent.
- Ability to define, refine, and prioritise backlog items in line with program increments.
- Familiarity with value-stream thinking, capacity planning, incremental delivery.
- Ability to run sprint ceremonies, support PI Planning, manage dependencies, and align with Release Train Engineer, Scrum Master, and System Architect roles.
2. Customer Focus & Stakeholder Management
- Demonstrated ability to interface with multiple customer groups: engineers, programme teams, certification bodies, and IT operations.
- Skilled in translating user needs into actionable requirements.
- Capability to run user interviews, gather feedback systematically, and perform impact/value analysis.
- Ability to push back constructively when requirements are unclear, unrealistic, or harmful to system coherence.
- A diplomatic but assertive communication style, especially helpful when managing conflicting expectations.
3. DOORS Ecosystem Technical Competence
- Hands-on experience with IBM DOORS (v9 or Next Generation), preferably in a systems engineering environment.
- Solid understanding of:
- Module structure and baselines
- Attributes, layout design, link modules
- Review workflows and access control
- Reporting mechanisms and DXL scripting (at least basic literacy)

- DOORS Administration
- Database maintenance basics
- Migration considerations (NG/alternative RM tools)

4. Development Team Interaction & Communication
- Experience working with development teams in an enterprise environment.
- Ability to convert high-level problem statements into clear, testable user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Understanding of how development constraints (tech debt, architectural limits, legacy code, DXL limitations) influence increments.
- Capability to facilitate communication between developers and users who do not “speak the same language.”
5. Software Architecture Awareness
- General understanding of modern software architectures (monolith vs distributed, APIs, data flows).
- Awareness of integration points between DOORS and other tools (ALM, PLM, Model-Based Systems Engineering, data layers).
- Familiarity with concepts such as:
- UI/UX constraints
- API limitations
- Performance considerations
- Versioning and configuration management
- Technical debt management
- UI/UX constraints
6. Data Management & Governance
- Understanding of data models, data dictionaries, and metadata management.
- Capacity to work with definitions of concepts, attributes, and traceability structures.
- Awareness of the challenges of multi-project, multi-aircraft configuration data.
- Ability to think in terms of semantic consistency across the ecosystem (RM, PLM, MBSE).
7. Analytical & Systems-Level Thinking
- Systems-thinking mindset: seeing how requirements, tools, processes, and roles interact.
- Ability to anticipate how a change in DOORS behaviour affects downstream activities: verification, configuration, audits, safety cases.
- Capability to produce structured documentation (EPICs, concepts, technical notes, workflows).
8. Personal Traits & Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Ability to synthesise complex problems concisely.
- High tolerance for ambiguity and conflicting priorities.
- Constructive confrontation skills: assertiveness without friction.
- Reliability, sense of ownership, and ability to self-organise.
9. Bonus or “Ideal” Extras
- Experience with DXL scripting or other automation languages.
- Familiarity with DOORS integrations (OSLC, ReqIF).
- Experience in aerospace or another complex engineered system domain.
- Exposure to DevOps, CI/CD, or test automation for enterprise tools.
- Understanding of user adoption strategies and change management.
