Job Description

Job Description:

To support the Air & Thermal System Domain , Airbus Operations is looking for a

Master Thesis in Air & Thermal Systems Energy Management (d/f/m)

Airbus offers a challenging and impactful Master’s thesis opportunity in the field of A ir & Thermal Systems Energy Management , focusing on both pneumatic and electrical energy (e.g., pumps, fans, compressors).

  • Location: Hamburg
  • Start Date: May 1, 2026
  • Duration: 6 months

Your Location

You will work at the largest production site for civil aircraft in Hamburg. Due to its location on the southern bank of the Elbe, commuting by ferry is an option. In your free time, experience the unique flair of Hamburg, where vibrant metropolitan culture meets nautical heritage.

Your Benefits

  • Work-life balance with a 35-hour week (flexible working hours).
  • Mobile working possible upon agreement with the department.
  • Travel within Germany (team events) or abroad is possible following consultation.
  • International environment with the opportunity to establish global contacts.
  • Modern technology: Work with diverse and cutting-edge technologies.
  • Full team integration: At Airbus, you are seen as a full team member. You aren't here to make coffee; you will be in close contact with interfaces and participate in weekly team meetings.
  • Networking: Opportunity to join the "Generation Airbus" community to expand your professional network.

The Project

The move toward "More Electrical Aircraft" leads to complex trade-offs between pneumatic and electrical energy requirements. The goal of this Master’s thesis is to investigate the synergistic optimization of these two energy domains within the context of air systems (e.g., Environmental Control System (ECS), de-icing, energy distribution) to achieve maximum fuel efficiency, enhanced performance, and optimal operational efficiency.

You will work closely with specialist engineers in system architecture, energy distribution, and performance analysis, utilizing real-world data and advanced simulation tools.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

The main objectives of this Master’s thesis are:

  • Modeling and Analysis: Develop or refine data-driven models for key aircraft air systems (e.g., ECS components, bleed air flow) to accurately quantify their energy (power/fuel) demand across various flight phases.
  • Pneumatic-Electric System Integration: Investigate and analyze the impact of different pneumatic-electric system architectures (e.g., varying bleed air usage levels, electric compressor drives) on overall aircraft energy consumption and system stability.
  • Trade-off Studies: Conduct detailed trade-off analyses between system performance (e.g., cabin comfort, safety margin) and energy consumption under different operational scenarios.
  • Simulation and Validation: Implement the proposed optimization strategies in a relevant simulation environment (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, dedicated system simulation tools) and assess their potential fuel savings and system impact.

Desired skills & qualifications

  • Currently full time enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant field such as Control Engineering/Optimization.
  • Strong theoretical background in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, control systems, electrical power systems, and optimization methods (e.g., Linear Programming, Dynamic Programming).
  • Practical knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python for modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
  • Good understanding of aircraft systems , particularly the Environmental Control System (ECS) and electrical power generation/distribution.
  • Experience with large datasets and Machine Learning techniques for system identification or predictive control is a plus.
  • Fluent English (written and spoken).

Please upload the following documents: Cover letter, CV, relevant certificates, and your certificate of enrollment.
