CIFRE / PhD in signal processing and psychoacoustics: 3D sound in the cockpit (f/m)

Employment type:  Full time

Job Description

Job Description:

Airbus Commercial Aircraft is looking for a PhD Student in signal processing and psychoacoustics (f/m) to join our Human Factors Department based in Toulouse, France.

You will be part of a team bringing scientific knowledge in Airbus products, processes and methods to efficiently integrate the human factor in the design for a safer, sustainable and innovative air transport system.

You will be involved in a research group aiming at developing the news concepts and technologies for future cockpits. More specifically, you will contribute to the development of solutions for the spatialization of communications & alerting in the cockpit. Virtual sound source spatialization allows to reproduce the source of the sound at a desired position. Sound source spatialization has the potential to improve speech intelligibility and overall situation awareness inside and outside the cockpit.

Your challenges:

This topic needs to be addressed via a multidisciplinary approach involving Human Factors, Signal Processing and Psychoacoustics. The objective is to apply to aeronautics recent academic results showing that sound spatialization enhances intelligibility, detection and orientation towards potential threats.

To reach that goal, firstly, the contribution of specific spatial sound processing to localization abilities for different types of signal (speech, non-speech) needs to be established. Secondly, impacts of spatialisation on detection, segregation and reaction to different types of co-occurring alerts (speech, non-speech) will be evaluated.

An experimental approach, using psychometrics and statistical data analysis is required to ensure a scientifically validated demonstration of the results.

The thesis will be supervised by IRBA (Institute of Biomedical Research of the Armies) in Brétigny-sur-Orge (close to Paris) from an academic point of view.

The PhD candidate will share his/her time between Airbus in Toulouse and IRBA (60/40 approximately).

Your boarding pass:

  • Graduated to a master 2 degree in psychoacoustics and/or auditory signal processing
  • Strong motivation to accompany human factors activities and support experiments over a period of 3 years.
  • Proactive, motivated and organized.
  • Advanced level of English (verbal and written)
  • The role being based in France, French would be an asset

This position requires a security clearance or will require being eligible for clearance by the recognized authorities.

Your working environment:

Global capital of aeronautics and European capital for space research, Toulouse is a dynamic city in the southwest of France served by an international airport. Ideally located between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic ocean and close to the Pyrenees mountains, it offers plenty of options for outdoor activities!
