Job Description
Join us, be part of more.
We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.
About your role:
As HSE Director, you will act as a trusted strategic partner to the Retail senior leadership, shaping how the organisation anticipates, manages and mitigates Health, Safety and Environmental risks. You will play a central role in embedding a proactive, risk‑aware culture, ensuring HSE considerations are fully integrated into operational decision‑making, strategic planning and the delivery of safe, reliable performance across the Business Unit.
You will provide clear direction, constructive challenge and expert insight to leaders at all levels, helping them navigate emerging risks, regulatory expectations and the implications of key business decisions. As a visible and influential member of the wider Centrica HSE community, you will contribute to group‑wide strategy, champion continuous improvement and drive alignment across functions and geographies to strengthen HSE performance and organisational resilience.
The role reports directly to the Group HSE Director and operates within a matrix structure, with multiple functional reporting lines across the organisation.
Responsibilities of the role:
Lead and inspire an internationally dispersed team of HSE professionals, contributing to the wider Centrica HSE Leadership Team to drive sustainable improvement.
Work with Business Unit colleagues to proactively identify, assess and control HSE risks, ensuring they are captured in risk registers, monitored effectively and managed within agreed risk appetite.
Develop and implement a robust first line of defence (LOD1) assurance programme to verify risk controls, adherence to internal standards and compliance with external laws and regulations.
Collaborate with the HSE CoE and Internal Audit to support second line (LOD2) and third line (LOD3) assurance activities.
Implement Group HSE Strategies, Policies and Standards within the Business Unit(s), and work with the HSE CoE to develop aligned, fit‑for‑purpose procedures where required.
Lead the creation and delivery of the annual HSE Improvement Plan for the Business Unit(s), ensuring alignment with the Centrica HSE Strategy and Group HSE Improvement Plan.
Ensure all incidents, events and near misses are thoroughly investigated, root causes identified and reports accurately captured in the Group HSE system.
Partner with Business Unit leadership and the Group HSE Director to agree budgets and resource requirements.
Provide authoritative HSE guidance and advice to leaders and colleagues, supporting informed and responsible decision‑making.
Fulfil relevant regulatory and accountability duties, including those associated with the FCA Senior Managers and Certification Regime, where applicable.
Here's what we’re looking for:
Significant experience in HSE and/or operational roles with substantial HSE accountability, supported by a strong track record of leadership.
Proven capability in identifying, assessing and managing Health, Safety and Environmental risks.
Demonstrable experience in leading and developing high‑performing teams.
Experience within the energy sector is desirable, alongside the ability to understand Gas, Electrical, Engineering, Mechanical and Process Safety disciplines.
Excellent interpersonal, influencing and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to inspire, engage and lead others without direct line authority.
