In this blog, we’re spotlighting the initiatives that make growth and learning a core part of life at Trainline. Here are some of the amazing initiatives we offer.🤩 Development programmes & workshops
Every career journey is unique, and so are the opportunities we offer. Our tailored programmes and workshops are designed to meet the diverse needs of our Trainliners across all roles, levels, and teams.

⭐ Internal mobility & promotions
We’re committed to helping our people grow and develop from within. Internal mobility isn’t just encouraged - it’s a core part of our culture. We believe career progression should be transparent, accessible, and supported, ensuring that every Trainliner has the opportunity to thrive in their journey. Here’s how we support internal mobility and career progression:
- 🚆 Taking you places: We put Trainliners in the driver’s seat with our clear Career Pathways. Every department has a mapped-out career journey, along with transparent salary bands, so Trainliners know exactly what’s needed to reach the next step in their progression.
- 📈 1 in 10 Trainliners are promoted every year: Around 10% of our Trainliners are promoted each year through our two performance review windows, ensuring fair, consistent, and achievable growth opportunities for all.
- 🌱 Grow on the go: We support every Trainliner with regular career conversations with their manager and a personal development plan via Culture Amp - helping everyone stay on track to reach their full potential.
- 🔄 Switching tracks: We also offer exciting secondment opportunities, allowing employees to temporarily work in a different department, team, or even location. Last year, 15 Trainliners switched tracks through secondments, gaining valuable cross-functional experience and broadening their skill set.
🧑🤝🧑 Mentorship
Sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the people around us. That’s why we created Mentor Me, our mentorship programme that connects over 250 Trainliners across different departments and levels.
- For mentees: It’s an opportunity to learn from someone who’s been there before, gain fresh perspectives, and build confidence.
- For mentors: It’s a chance to share their knowledge, strengthen leadership skills, and support others on their journey.
But don’t just take our word for it… Rakesh from our Tech Team shared:
“Mentoring has helped me build more confidence in myself and in my role as a Team Lead. I’ve gained tools to improve my communication, presentation, and delegation skills. I’ve even volunteered to be a mentor now, so I can give back what I’ve learned from my mentee journey.”
💡 Learning days
Balancing day-to-day work with personal development can be challenging. That’s why we introduced quarterly Learning Days - dedicated, no-meeting days focused entirely on development.
These days give our Trainliners the time and space to:
- Attend fireside chats with awesome keynote speakers
- Take part in career-focused workshops
- Focus on self-led learning, choosing the skills and topics that matter most to their growth

💸 Learning budget
We know how important it is to invest in personal growth, which is why every Trainliner gets £300 (or the euro equivalent) each year to put towards their development. Whether its online courses, learning a new language to connect with Trainliners across our international offices, or picking up a few books, we’re here to support our Trainliners in growing the skills that matter most.
In fact, one of our Trainliners recently used their Learning Budget to brush up on their French before relocating from our London office to a secondment in our Paris office – a great way to prepare for the next adventure! 🇫🇷💻 Learning express
