The position of the Head of Public Policy Aviation is a senior role with responsibility for managing the TUI Group airlines response to Aviation Policy and regulatory developments and to provide technical expertise and understanding, information and commentary on the implications of such developments across TUI’s main markets in the EU, the UK and on international level within the travel and aviation industry. The post holder will have the autonomy and ability to independently develop and lead strong working relationships with the aviation authorities worldwide, and to represent the views of TUI Group within these environments.

ABOUT THE JOB

As Head of Public Policy Aviation, you will help to reduce (or leverage) the impact of aviation policy and regulation through lobbying the EU, UK and other jurisdictions of importance for TUI Group airlines. Together with the team International Public Policy and EU affairs you will represent the interests of the TUI Group vis-à-vis relevant aviation decision makers and stakeholders. You will act as the main focal point within the TUI Group airlines coordinating our policies on, among others, rules on consumer regulation, airspace, airline safety, security and border control issues, sustainable aviation, plus other areas as required. You will be monitoring and responding to passenger rights regulations in other countries including the US, Canada and our airline operations worldwide, in close collaboration with relevant departments across TUI aviation.
The role will report to the Director International Public Policy & EU Affairs and can be based in Brussels, Hannover, Luton, or Amsterdam.
You will be responsible for developing relationships with relevant travel and aviation related trade associations (A4E, AirlinesUK, IATA, EASA, relevant national regulators, etc.), acting as primary point of contact for the airlines internally and externally as appropriate, and providing and coordinating lobbying input across the TUI markets where necessary.
Other accountabilities include actively and independently engaging in public policy stakeholder dialogue on EU, UK, and on (inter-)national level as required; monitoring and reporting on all legislative activities relevant for TUI airlines; preparing legal and policy analyses, briefings, reports and presentations on relevant public policy topics as required; regularly liaising with relevant other TUI departments on group and regional level; building on a reliable network of contacts on the EU and on national policy level; independently leading internal working groups as required.

Moreover, you will represent TUI Group’s interest on aviation matters at speaking conferences or workshops as appropriate. Finally, by seeking ways to reduce costs or generate additional revenues you assist in achieving financial targets and delivering shareholder value.

ABOUT YOU

  • Significant senior management experience, in a regulatory or policy arena.
  • Knowledge of systems of EU and UK public policy development, and experience lobbying, influencing and navigating governmental bodies in EU and UK
  • Understanding of the Aviation industry, and the commercial and operational needs of a complex, multi-AOC airline group
  • Credibility and gravitas to operate with Board level colleagues, and with political and civil service operators at all levels
  • Ability to think commercially and strategically and to translate strategy and public policy into commercial and operational action
  • A self-motivated leader who takes the initiative, builds relationships and works collaboratively with a track record of delivery
  • A skilled communicator with the proven ability to influence and lobby, partner with senior leaders, develop a strong network of contacts throughout the industry and gain support and commitment from managers and employees across the business
  • Ability to operate cross-culturally in a UK and pan-European arena, with stakeholders and / or service providers across a range of source markets
  • A logical thinker with the ability to generate ideas and alternatives
  • Demonstrable ability to clearly articulate concepts and arguments verbally and in written documentation

This role requires strong business English (written & spoken), and preferably fluency/good working knowledge of at least one other EU language. The role will involve travel across the EU, the UK and occasional long-haul travel.
