Job Description

We are looking for an experienced international lawyer as Head of Legal for the commercial, operating and distributing businesses of the Central Region of TUI Group.

Reporting to the General Counsel – Markets, Airlines & Group Technology, the role is accountable for the provision of specialised and general legal advice and support and management topics to a range of businesses and senior stakeholders across the German, Austrian, Swiss, and Polish operating territories (collectively the Central Region).

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • The role holder will be accountable for the provision of legal services across the commercial, operating, and distributing businesses of the Central Region of TUI Group, including the source markets of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, and the Czech Republic, as well as new and future market businesses and related cross-functional or joint transactional areas. This includes leading and managing a team of Legal Counsel, other lawyers, and support associates across several jurisdictions to provide innovative and streamlined legal assistance and direction to diverse businesses and functions within our scope.
  • Providing advice to the statutory or management boards, other governance fora and other senior leaders around legal risk and regulatory impact of business challenges and initiatives. Acting as a facilitator to help progress business strategy and commercial endeavour in a way that appreciates and is respectful to legal risk.
  • Managing legal input & support into local and regional operational crisis response situations helping to ensure that legal risk is minimised in the process and helping the affected business deliver best possible operational outcome.
  • The role has a high level of responsibility, autonomy, and strategic oversight, supporting closely the MD Central Region and the relevant Boards in respect of significant regional or source market legal issues and projects.
  • Advising on complex, high risk and high value projects and activity. Sitting on and contributing to steering committees of relevant projects both within individual markets and cross-market.
  • Managing the selection of and relationships with external Counsel and Legal Advisors for the Central Region ensuring that they are used efficiently and only in a way that adds significant value. Contributing to wider initiatives around external advisor cost reduction across markets and other functions.
  • While ensuring cross-market collaboration between other Group lawyers when they are engaged in activity or contributing to issues within your area of accountability or responsibility, you will arbitrate cross-market concerns where necessary.
  • Working closely with compliance functions to ensure that risk, in respect of Anti-Bribery & Corruption, Competition, Data Privacy Law, economic sanctions and other regulatory is mitigated across relevant businesses.
  • Actively seek to develop your team members, ensuring a scheme of continual professional development, encouraging and inspiring talent.
  • Supporting the General Counsel, Markets, Airlines and Group Technology, in the development, roll out and maintenance of the wider legal team’s strategy through membership of the Legal Leadership Team.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Due to the risk potential and the high relevance of appropriate and effective legal advice, a minimum of eight years post-qualification experience in a relevant jurisdiction is required.
  • Excellent ability to interpret and provide advice on new and complex areas of law relevant to the leisure industry and to identify legal risk within complex strategic plans.
  • Experience in managing high performance teams, setting adequate priorities and in an efficient way.
  • Ability to influence at all levels internally, Managing Director Central Region, Legal Director – Markets & Airlines as well as group functions such as Group Compliance, Risk Management, Internal Audit, Finance etc.
  • Ability to influence with external stakeholders including European and national governments.
  • High personal integrity and credibility who can spread a high-performance culture across the lawyers in the Central Region.
  • Fluent English and German language skills.
