💻 Head of Product 📍London (Hybrid, 40% in office) 💸 £Salary + Bonus + Shares + Benefits

As Head of Product for the Platform at Trainline, you will set the strategic vision, shape the product roadmap, and collaborate closely with Engineering, Architecture, and Product teams to ensure the core technology stack meets the performance, reliability, and scalability needs of the business. You’ll oversee a portfolio of squads dedicated to enabling frictionless customer experiences and a productive developer environment, helping others experiment, innovate, and deliver world-class digital products. In doing so, you will balance immediate operational responsibilities—like managing one squad’s day-to-day—while providing strategic guidance to multiple other squads and their Product Managers.

In this role, you’ll champion a data-driven, outcome-focused approach, establishing and tracking KPIs and OKRs related to platform health, cost efficiency, and developer productivity, such as Reliability, Speed, Maintenance, Security, Cost Efficiency, and Productivity. You’ll represent the “voice of the platform” in high-level decision making, shaping medium- to long-term strategies, and working closely with executive leadership and cross-functional partners. With your combination of commercial acumen, technical understanding, and product leadership, you will influence the future direction of Trainline’s platform to drive sustained growth, high-quality customer experiences, and effective product delivery at scale.

This role has overall responsibility for 7 squads, including direct management for the day-to-day operation and roadmap of 1 squad (e-commerce). In addition, line management for 3 Product Managers across the Platform, including Core App and Web tech, Cloud Native development, Customer and Identity teams. The Platform team sits within the “Future of Rail” strategic theme and supports all customer propositions across our B2C and B2B businesses.

Key partnerships in this role are with the Platform Head of Engineering and the Architects to set vision, quarterly OKRs, and prioritise delivery outcomes for this area to achieve overall company goals. It is also imperative to have strong relationships with Product counterparts across Trainline to agree ways of working to optimize towards company goals and ensure alignment.

As Head of Product at Trainline, you will...🚄

  • Be on top of the competitive landscape and global industry trends, articulating opportunities and threats as they apply, owning the strategy and medium/long-term roadmap for a platform or theme
  • Use insights and developed strategies to have an impact across all of Tech, Product and Design
  • Influence the development of product managers to synthesize and develop stronger and more impactful insights, championing an outcome driven approach, through coaching, performance management and personal development
  • Be a compelling storyteller inspiring those closely connected with Product through written and verbal comms, and confidently present at internal forums
  • Effectively lead and influence engagement with PR, Commercial, Marketing, Finance, Legal etc including external partners
  • Be accountable for achieving outcomes, and successfully delegate day-to-day responsibility for the detail where appropriate
  • Work on multiple large initiatives in parallel, both in and outside specific Product area, collaborating with colleagues and cross-functional teams through leadership, not escalation
  • Reliably and autonomously solve and execute on high-level issues and opportunities
  • Balance product, UX and technical concerns with the help of your peers to gain maximum business value, effectively influencing customer experience during product development (e.g. IA, UX, visuals etc) and amplifying go to market activities (e.g. brand, marketing, CS etc)
  • Grow individuals through mentoring and/or as line manager to APMs / PMs
  • Establish domain excellence and be able to represent Engineering, Commercial, Design counterparts whenever necessary
  • Live the Trainline values and behaviours, demonstrating leadership and accountability for your Product remit, building a healthy Product and Engineering culture

Qualifications

  • Established experience in a Product Management leadership role in a tech business
  • Technical fluency in e-commerce, modern cloud architecture, APIs, developer toolchains and building scalable platforms
  • Worked in a fast-paced environment where you have shaped high volume B2C and/or B2B digital experiences
  • Demonstrate established processes and ways of working with business and engineering partners to achieve delivery outcomes
  • Experience working across a complex and evolving product set, using the latest techniques for product discovery and hypothesis-driven product development
  • A track record as the voice of the customer, answering questions and finding insights from an array of sources
  • Deep commercial acumen and evidence of contributions to wider business decisions outside of the Product domain
  • Experience communicating effectively at C-level as a compelling story teller
