Job Description

The future is quantum. Oxford Ionics is at the forefront of pioneering quantum computing, delivering world-leading innovation to create the most powerful, accurate, and reliable quantum systems. Quantum computing offers a radically new way of building computers that harnesses the power of quantum physics to outperform conventional supercomputers exponentially. Using our unique trapped-ion technology, we are leading the race to unleash quantum computing's unparalleled potential.

What To Expect

The Quantum Processor Engineering (QPE) team at Oxford Ionics is responsible for the design, simulation, fabrication, packaging, and testing of our Quantum Processing Units. We are seeking a talented and motivated Photonics Development Engineer to join our team. This role focuses on the engineering and testing of integrated photonics within our QPUs, ensuring that our designs and parts meet the required specifications.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

In this role, you will be responsible for defining, setting up, verifying, and conducting extensive testing dedicated to photonics. Your tasks will include collecting, recording, analysing, and appropriately storing data from these tests. You will also be expected to investigate and understand any deviations from expected results, ensuring that our photonics designs and parts perform as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Photonics Test Capability: Design, build, improve, automate, and maintain integrated photonics test setups to deliver the required photonics test capability.
  • Photonics Fabrication Process Performance: Monitor and maintain the performance of photonics fabrication processes, inform simulation (e.g., fill fraction variations batch to batch, over wafer, etc.), and manage data by collating and reporting measurement results.
  • Performance Testing: Testing the performance of integrated photonics devices against specifications.
  • Data Analysis: Analyse and visualise measurement data to ensure accurate reporting and decision-making.

Co-Responsibilities (with Integrated Photonics Designer):

  • Photonics Component Specification: Achieve and maintain photonic component specifications initially and continually.
  • Failure Analysis and Mitigation: Conduct failure analysis and implement necessary mitigations to ensure optimal performance of photonics components.

Requirements

You will need a Master's or PhD in a relevant field or equivalent experience. Hands-on experience with optical setups and a basic understanding of wave optics are essential. You should have basic coding skills for measurement automation and data analysis. Experience in integrated photonics characterisation is highly desirable. A "can-do attitude" and the right balance between focus and a desire for exploration are also important for this role.

Benefits
