Job Description

Job Title: Station Supervisor

BUSINESS FUNCTION: Customer & Commerical - Stations

SALARY: £34,601 - First 6 month Training Salary £29,411

Grade: RSC

LOCATION: Sunderland

HOURS: Full Time

Sunderland is more than a station—it's the beating heart of rail travel across the North. Every day, thousands of customers and hundreds of train services rely on seamless coordination, quick decision-making, and exceptional teamwork to keep moving.

We're looking for an experienced and operationally focused Station Supervisor to join our team and play a critical role in the day-to-day running of Sunderland Station.

This is an exciting opportunity for a railway professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, can remain calm under pressure, and is passionate about delivering safe, reliable, and customer-focused operations.

No two days are the same. You'll be making real-time operational decisions, responding to disruption, coordinating train movements, supporting station teams, and ensuring customers experience the best possible service, even when challenges arise.

This is a highly visible role where your leadership, communication skills, and operational expertise will directly influence the performance and safety of one of the UK's busiest stations.

What You'll Be Doing

You'll take responsibility for ensuring the efficient and safe operation of Sunderland Station by:

  • Acting as the central point of contact between station operations, Train Operating Companies, signalling centres, and Network Rail.
  • Coordinating train movements and operational activity to keep services running safely and efficiently.
  • Liaising with operators including Northern, Grand Central & Nexus
  • Managing operational incidents and service disruptions, making informed decisions to minimise customer impact.
  • Supporting and supervising station colleagues, ensuring compliance with operational procedures and safety standards.
  • Leading emergency response and evacuation procedures when required.
  • Building strong relationships with stakeholders to resolve issues quickly and maintain smooth station operations.

About You

We're seeking a confident and proactive operational leader who can balance safety, performance, and customer service in a demanding environment.

  • Experience within station operations, train dispatch, railway operations, or a similar operational railway environment.
  • A strong understanding of railway operating procedures and safety requirements.
  • Experience managing service disruption and making decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Experience using railway operational systems such as P2 and TRUST.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise multiple competing demands.
  • A passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences.
  • The ability to motivate, support, and lead colleagues through challenging situations.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,650 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment. Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board. At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B - we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview. We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment. No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
