Job Description:


We are seeking an ambitious Traction Power Engineer with experience in rail systems projects. The successful candidate will have a background in electrical engineering and/or power engineering, enabling them to contribute to the design of Traction power systems for electrical railways.


Key Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for producing technical work packages on a wide range of Mott MacDonald projects under the supervision of Senior Engineers and alongside other junior engineers. The work will be varied and stimulating, covering all aspects of traction power systems for both AC and DC electrified railways. The role will encompass a very broad range of traction power design elements.
The principal areas of work include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of AC and DC traction power supply systems following the applicable standards,
  • Design Production of earthing and bonding schemes,
  • Production of specifications to support procurement of traction power equipment,
  • Production of polished consultancy reports,
  • Use of CAD software to produce 2D and 3D drawings, schematics and diagrams,
  • Use of TRAIN traction load-flow simulation package to model traction power supplies,
  • Production of electrical protection schemes and relay settings,
  • Contribution to ongoing development of tools and processes,
  • Attendance in Client-facing meetings from time to time.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including other discipline engineers and technicians, to achieve project goals and milestones,
  • Coordinate with stakeholders, contractors, and suppliers to ensure seamless integration and functionality of electrical systems,
  • Contribute to team meetings and other team events.

Candidate Specification:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Engineering.
  • Experience in electrical/power engineering applied to rail systems projects, preferentially in an engineering consultancy environment.
  • Knowledge of traction substation key pieces of equipment and principles related to traction power systems.
  • Working knowledge of traction load flow modelling software such as TRAIN (or equivalent) and non-traction load flow modelling software such as ETAP (or equivalent).
  • Proficient in using AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills and teamwork abilities.
  • Familiarity with international rail standards and regulations related to rail electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility and its application to rail systems would be an advantage,
  • Knowledge of Python, Matlab, C++ and other software skills would be an advantage.
