About the business unit

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of the role

Due to new project wins and continued growth, we’re looking for Senior Nuclear HVAC/Building Services Engineers to join our Power, Process & Nuclear division. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on innovative projects across the defence and nuclear new-build industries. As part of our growing team, you will contribute to high-profile engineering challenges while developing your career within an organisation committed to supporting your professional growth.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Production and checking of detailed design calculations to support design requirements/development through concept and preliminary phases, and into detail design, to and assistance during installation and commissioning borne design queries. (RIBA Stage 0 to Stage 6)
  • Producing documentation, assessment/condition reports, survey reports, basis of designs, procurement specifications. Contribute to the production of multi discipline design document such as, but not limited to: Project Requirement Documents, Project Verification Plans, Quality Plans, Design Justification Report
  • Production and review of detailed design calculations to support design proposals
  • Production and review of detailed design drawings, layouts and schematics including heating, ventilation, LTHW, Chilled Water, specialist LEV and BMS installations
  • Experience in the delivery of written work, eg. functional Specifications, Basis of Design, Equipment Specifications and Validation and Verification plans
  • Producing estimates of work elements including equipment and man hour costs
  • Supporting the preparation of bids and estimates
  • Ensure compliance with construction (design and management) regulations
  • Mentoring and guidance of junior staff

The role requires knowledge and experience in project delivery with experience of optioneering and front-end design and detail design. Specific responsibilities are:

  • Support the Project(s) in all aspects of HVAC with knowledge, specifically the delivery of the design of HVAC Systems or modification to existing HVAC Systems
  • Working with a small integrated design team in the delivery of design packages against milestones
  • Manage multiple projects at a time
  • Determine project requirements independently
  • Ability to estimate hours for scope changes or additional works along with outlining supporting schedule for the discipline
  • Lead the delivery of the single discipline design reviews
  • Support and contribute multi discipline design review
  • Produce Reports and documentation to comply with CDM
  • Manage content of schedules.

This role requires interface with Integrated Design Team, facility team (including systems engineering), other project functions and must work closely throughout project phases. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment is essential. The candidate needs experience of working within a highly regulated industry, preferably gained within the nuclear industry. To be fully conversant with UK Statutory Regulations and industry design guides and standards relating to this discipline.

Candidate specification

  • Degree in Building Services, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Chartered status with the IMechE or other relevant professional body
  • Experience within a highly regulated environment (Nuclear preferable, but will consider Oil & Gas, Pharmaceutical and Rail experience)
  • Preferably knowledge & experience in nuclear containment ventilation design
  • Broad knowledge of industry standards, legislation, and engineering principles, ideally including knowledge of nuclear ventilation guidelines and standards
  • Experience of using design software such as Hevacomp, IES, Pipenet
  • Revit and AutoCAD knowledge and experience will be beneficial
  • Initiative and self-motivation to make decisions
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • In-depth knowledge of current Building Regulations and relevant Legislation
