About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of the role

Mott MacDonald is expanding its energy business in Germany and is seeking a Principal HVDC Engineer to support the delivery of major transmission and distribution projects across Germany and Europe.

This is an excellent opportunity for a professional who is motivated by the challenge of supporting some of Europe's most significant energy transition projects. You will play a key role in the delivery of HVDC transmission schemes connecting renewable generation and strengthening cross-border power networks.

As a Principal HVDC Engineer, you will support the development and delivery of HVDC projects from feasibility through detailed design and commissioning. You will work with multidisciplinary teams across Europe on cutting-edge transmission infrastructure.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

• Deliver engineering solutions for HVDC transmission projects
• Support converter station and transmission system design activities
• Develop technical specifications and design documentation
• Perform engineering calculations and technical assessments
• Coordinate interfaces between HVDC and AC transmission systems
• Support system studies, protection and control integration activities
• Liaise with clients, transmission operators and equipment suppliers
• Participate in technical reviews and design assurance activities
• Support construction, testing and commissioning activities
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical excellence within the team

Candidate specification Essential:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• Experience delivering HVDC transmission projects
• Knowledge of converter stations and transmission infrastructure
• Familiarity with IEC, EN and utility standards
• Experience within transmission and renewable energy infrastructure
• Excellent communication skills in German and English

Desirable:

• Experience working with major HVDC technology providers and TSOs
• Experience with offshore wind integration projects
• Chartership or equivalent professional accreditation
• Experience supporting commissioning and energisation activities
