Your opportunity
As a Principal Flood/Drainage Engineer based in Sydney, you will play a key role in the delivery of flood modelling, stormwater drainage, hydrology and hydraulic assessment projects across New South Wales. You’ll work closely with our NSW water resources and civil design teams while being part of our national Australian Water team, supporting major infrastructure, urban development, transport, utilities and precinct development projects from early planning through to detailed design and delivery.
You will be joining a diverse and passionate team with a proven track record delivering major projects across Australia in a growing sector. This role will give you the opportunity to lead and contribute to complex flood and drainage studies, develop practical design solutions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and support key clients across NSW. You will also assist with business development opportunities under the direction of our team leaders, including proposal preparation, client engagement and technical input into bids.
This role presents a fantastic opportunity to further develop your technical leadership in flooding and drainage while contributing to projects that improve community resilience, infrastructure performance and sustainable water outcomes.
You will have the opportunity to:

Lead and deliver flood modelling, stormwater drainage, hydrology and hydraulic assessment projects across NSW and Australia.

Prepare and review technical reports, design documentation, flood impact assessments and drainage strategies.

Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary infrastructure, development, transport and water projects.

Build strong relationships with clients, authorities and project partners, representing Mott MacDonald in technical discussions and meetings.

Support tenders, proposals and business development activities to contribute to the growth and direction of the team.

Mentor and develop junior engineers and modellers, helping to strengthen capability within the NSW and national water teams.
About you
As an experienced flood, drainage or water resources engineer, you will bring strong technical capability, consulting experience and the confidence to lead project delivery within a multidisciplinary environment. You’ll be comfortable working with clients and authorities, guiding technical outcomes and supporting the growth of our Sydney-based water resources capability. Some key requirements for the role include:

Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or a related discipline.

Significant experience delivering flood modelling, stormwater drainage, hydrology and hydraulic design projects within a consulting or infrastructure environment.

Strong experience with flood modelling and drainage design tools such as TUFLOW, DRAINS, 12d, HEC-RAS, MUSIC or similar software.

Experience preparing flood impact assessments, stormwater management plans, drainage strategies, technical reports and design documentation.

Strong understanding of Australian Rainfall and Runoff, NSW floodplain management requirements, council guidelines and relevant Australian standards.

Experience working across transport, urban development, utilities, precincts, land development or major infrastructure projects.

Proven ability to lead technical delivery, manage project interfaces and coordinate inputs from multidisciplinary teams.

Strong client-facing capability, including the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and confidently.

Experience in consulting, including preparing client-ready deliverables and supporting proposals or bids.

Proven technical leadership, including mentoring and guiding junior engineers and modellers.

A positive, proactive mindset with the confidence to lead, collaborate and contribute to a vibrant team culture.
