About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of the role

The Energy Transition team within our Energy unit is looking for Piping designers to strengthen the existing Mechanical team; providing design capabilities across a variety of power and energy projects types and technologies in a growing portfolio, supporting our clients in the UK and across Europe as part of the energy transition.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Working with the project team to develop cost-effective, efficient and innovative solutions to complex problems to create practical designs based on these solutions
  • Working on projects in a variety of stages of maturity, including Feasibility Studies, FEED Studies and Detailed Design; Coordinating with a team and as part of a multi-disciplinary project, interfacing with other discipline’s technical leads, project engineer, project manager and customer
  • Preparation of deliverables such as: 3D modelling of piping systems, preparation of isometric drawings, preparation of piping layouts and preparation of Piping Material Take-offs (pipe and fittings, insulation, painting)
  • Supporting development of plant layouts (2&3D) and plant 3D models
  • Working with equipment vendors on developing designs of equipment packages and participating in technical evaluations of vendor designs
  • Support in developing proposals and bids for the mechanical discipline
  • Understand CDM and other relevant HSE legislation
  • Support the technical leadership and governance of the Piping and project team


Candidate specification
Essential:

  • Experienced Piping designer, with demonstratable knowledge of standards and best practices of the piping design
  • Ability to adapt and work on multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficiency in piping modelling software such as Aveva E3D / PDMS or similar
  • Proficiency in CAD software
  • Knowledge of cold piping design
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings
  • Ability to read and understand process diagrams (P&ID)
  • Knowledge and understanding of piping technical specifications (Piping Material Specification)
  • Knowledge of American piping standards (ASME B31.1, ASME B16.9, ASME B16.11, ASME B16.5)
  • Good knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Competent with the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Precision, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills

Desirable:

  • A Degree in a relevant Engineering subject
  • Knowledge of hot piping design and fundamentals of stress analysis
  • Ability to prepare technical evaluations of piping components and equipment (valves, filters, fittings, pumps)
  • Ability to draft piping specifications (schedule calculation, selection of fittings and materials, in-depth knowledge of standards)
