About the business unit

Mott MacDonald’s Advisory and Programme Delivery (APD) unit delivers both project, programme & commercial management (PPCM) services and advisory solutions across the built environment, energy, water, environmental, transportation, health and care sectors.

We deliver tailored solutions that directly address our clients’ key challenges, combining our world-class project expertise with strong programme delivery capabilities and advisory services. APD delivers services to projects ranging in scale and complexity up to £20bn, through the technical disciplines of programme management, project management, project controls, scheduling, cost management, estimating, infrastructure finance, management consulting, digital consulting and education, health and care management.

Energy – Nuclear Decommissioning

Mott MacDonald is a trusted partner in the global energy sector, with deep expertise across nuclear, renewables, hydro, thermal, and electricity and gas. A key area of focus is nuclear decommissioning, where we support clients in safely managing the end-of-life phase of nuclear facilities, ensuring environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and value optimisation.

Our teams work with major public and private sector organisations including nuclear site operators, regulatory bodies, and government agencies. We provide support across the full lifecycle of decommissioning programmes—covering strategy development, cost and risk management, waste management, site remediation, and infrastructure transformation.

We are actively contributing to some of the UK’s most complex and long-term decommissioning programmes, helping to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable outcomes while supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.

Overview of the role

Owing to the continued growth of our energy portfolio, particularly in nuclear decommissioning, we have a unique opportunity for Quantity Surveyors to join our fast-growing team in Whitehaven and Warrington.

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in some of the most technically complex, highly regulated, and strategically important projects in the UK. You will play a key role in supporting nuclear decommissioning programmes, helping to manage costs, mitigate risks, and ensure effective commercial delivery across large-scale, multi-year projects.

We are looking to attract the finest talent to be part of this journey as we support key clients across a broad portfolio of nuclear decommissioning and wider energy programmes.

With extensive experience in the energy sector, our Advisory and Programme Delivery teams deliver projects ranging from nuclear decommissioning and site remediation to new energy infrastructure and low-carbon transition initiatives.

Candidate Specification

The Quantity Surveyor will support the successful delivery of client projects within the energy sector, with a strong focus on nuclear decommissioning.

The role focuses on effective cost management, NEC contract administration, and commercial leadership to ensure efficient, transparent delivery aligned with client objectives within a highly regulated environment.

The Quantity Surveyor will drive value, manage risk, build effective stakeholder relationships, and champion commercial best practice throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and administer NEC4 contracts in accordance with project and governance requirements within nuclear decommissioning programmes
  • Control and implement contract variations efficiently, ensuring timely and compliant agreement
  • Maintain accurate cost control, monitoring, and forecasting across complex, long-term projects
  • Continuously improve the quality and reliability of cost forecasts and budgets
  • Work collaboratively with client, contractor, and multidisciplinary teams to achieve project objectives, KPIs, and value outcomes
  • Support commercial and cost management activities in a highly regulated nuclear environment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety requirements

Experience required for the Quantity Surveyor position:

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
  • NEC ECC Accreditation and practical experience administering NEC4 ECC contracts
  • Hold, or be working towards, membership of an appropriate professional body such as MRICS
  • Experience working on technically complex infrastructure projects within highly regulated industries (e.g. nuclear, energy, utilities)
  • Understanding or experience of nuclear decommissioning, waste management, or site remediation (desirable but not essential)
  • Experience managing contract cashflow, governance, and change control
  • Demonstrable experience administering contracts using CEMAR
  • Proven experience in cost control and estimating
  • Competent in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Teams, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Practical, hands-on experience administering NEC4 ECC and/or PSC contracts

Desirable

  • Demonstrable experience administering contracts using Thinkproject Contracts
  • NEC4 Project Manager Accreditation
  • Experience working within nuclear or other highly regulated environments
