Job Description

Location/s: Hong Kong
Recruiter contact: Maggie Chan
Hiring manager contact: Sally Lam
Employment Type: Contingent - Independent consultant

At Mott MacDonald, you’ll join a community driven by curiosity, creativity, human focus and integrity, collaborating to deliver sustainable outcomes for our clients and society.

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Geologist to strengthen our Hong Kong team and help shape ground risk management across complex infrastructure and buildings projects. You will lead and contribute to ground characterisation, ground investigation (GI) design and supervision, ground models, and interpretative reporting that inform robust geotechnical design decisions. You’ll work across multidisciplinary teams and with clients and authorities to bring connected thinking to slopes, tunnels, deep basements, foundations, reclamation and linear transport assets.

We trust brilliant people to do brilliant things—owning responsibilities, collaborating across disciplines, and mentoring others as you deliver high-quality work.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead desk studies, GI scoping/design, tender documentation, contractor briefing, site supervision, and data QA/QC for rock and soil investigations (onshore and nearshore).
  • Build 3D ground models and deliver factual and interpretative reports that quantify uncertainties and risks; present findings to clients and project partners.
  • Advise on geohazards (slope stability, rockfall, karst, groundwater, settlement) and mitigation strategies; interface with geotechnical designers on analysis and constructability.
  • Manage interfaces with authorities and standards (e.g., Hong Kong GEO guidance and relevant international codes) and support statutory submissions.
  • Apply and advocate good digital practices (e.g., gINT/OpenGround, GIS/ArcGIS/QGIS, BIM data exchange, model governance).
  • Contribute to bids (methodologies, logistics, resourcing) and support work-winning in Transport and Built Environment markets.
  • Mentor junior colleagues; foster a safe, inclusive and high-performance team culture.
  • Coordinate with geotechnics, civils, structures, environmental and tunnelling specialists on major projects (tunnels, deep excavations, basements, bridge foundations, reclamation, coastal works).

Specifications:

  • Degree in Geology or Engineering Geology (MSc preferred).
  • Significant post-graduate experience in engineering geology within consultancy or contracting, across investigation planning, supervision, data management, and reporting.
  • Proven delivery on complex urban projects (e.g., slopes, tunnels, basements, transport corridors) in Hong Kong or comparable jurisdictions.
  • Excellent technical writing, stakeholder engagement, and presentation skills; ability to lead client meetings and guide multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with GI data and ground modelling tools (e.g., gINT/OpenGround), GIS, and collaborative digital workflows.
  • CGeol (Chartered Geologist) or equivalent professional recognition; progress toward chartership will be supported.
  • Cantonese and/or Mandarin language skills.
  • Experience interfacing with Hong Kong GEO practices and submissions; familiarity with regional reclamation and coastal works.
  • Working knowledge of numerical/geotechnical tools (e.g., PLAXIS) and integration of ground models with design analysis.
