About the business unit
The Buildings and Cities Unit (BNC) has a major presence in Mott MacDonald's regional offices throughout the UK and mainland Europe, providing a wide range of diverse and transferable cross-sector skills across five key Sectors; Advisory, Built Environment, Energy, Transportation and Water. We also provide local services to customers and technical leadership to the rest of the Group in these sectors.

Job description:

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced, qualified and enthusiastic transport professional to join our award winning Light Rapid Transit team in the southeast of England (Cambridge, Croydon, Norwich, London or Southampton) focused on light rapid transit; including light rail, bus rapid transit, tram-train and personal rapid transit, aligned with our global Urban Transit & Mobility practice.

Successful technical delivery and maintenance of trust between Client and the company are key to commercial and financial success for Mott MacDonald. The role may oversee one or several projects, supporting Project Managers and Mott MacDonald management as well as mentoring and coaching as necessary with the prime aim of ensuring that projects deliver a successful outcome.

The right candidate shall be able to combine managerial leadership and broad subject matter understanding with technical leadership responsibilities that promote a collaborative approach, inspire teams successfully delivering outcomes for both client and for Mott MacDonald.

You will be offered, and be expected to take on, a high degree of autonomy and responsibility and be able to actively contribute to growing the Infrastructure team's profile and work portfolio through successful project delivery and active participation in business development

Key Accountabilities:

  • Senior Associates / Technical Principals are highly accountable for the successful completion of all projects under their oversight. Success means commercial, financial, technical success and realisation of client benefits agreed at bid stage. Broken down it means:
  • Accountable for commercial success. This means ensuring contract terms and risk mitigations from WIN are put into practice; that terms and risk are challenged during WIN to ensure project is feasible.
  • Accountable for client satisfaction. This means supporting the Project Manager to ensure that suitably skilled staff are made available and deliver to meet the project requirements. This also means balancing and managing the tension between internal and external needs.
  • Accountable for sound project technical delivery. This means instigating formal reviews and application of lessons learnt within projects, assessing whether the project structure is fit for purpose, that risks are reviewed and mitigations put in place, and that the Project Plan of Work (PPW) is actively used to manage the project. It also means ensuring that the project team deliver outputs 'right first time'.
  • Heavily involved in the resourcing of projects including collaboration with other offices, regions and countries, including the development of staff capabilities.
  • Ultimately accountable for Health, Safety and Welfare. This means working to Mott MacDonald’s global standards and demonstrating leadership in Health Safety and Welfare alongside project commercials and risk.

Candidate Specification:

The successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or transport related discipline, or extensive equivalent experience
  • Chartered (or Incorporated) Engineer
  • Demonstrable record in providing technical leadership on LRT and infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrable record of successfully managing project teams and of planning and controlling project programmes, budgets and resources
  • Demonstrable record in providing team leadership
  • Experienced in the preparation of fee proposals
  • Proven ability of commercial and financial competency
  • IT and standard industry software skills, including knowledge of BIM
  • Able to communicate confidently and professionally with colleagues, fellow professionals and clients at all levels (written and verbal)
  • Able to contribute to business development & development of client relationships
  • Confident, articulate, collaborative & proactive
  • Strong client-focussed behaviours and a desire to develop opportunities with clients.
  • Knowledge and experience of local authority governance.

Experience in working in the design and implementation of urban rapid transit systems is preferred, though broad experience within the transportation sector would also be considered.
