About the business unit
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and​ advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of role
Following our continued growth and wider success in winning major projects across the UK, we are looking for an experienced CDM Principal Designer Advisor (PDA) to join our TMS design team. This role will be based in one of our UK offices but using our digital platforms will be an integral part of our project teams around the country. This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing, vibrant and dynamic design team and contribute to achieving a high performing shared enterprise with our partners.

As a Senior Principal PDA you will join our Integrated Project Teams promoting the elimination of hazards in design over and above ensuring compliance with our own internal processes and the responsibilities under the 2015 CDM Regulations. Using your excellent communication and collaboration skills, you will promote a safety and healthy by design culture working closely with Project Managers and designers, lead on innovation and adoption of best practice in this vitally important area, and provide advice to our clients to assist them in discharging their responsibilities under the CDM Regulations.

Your responsibilities will also include:
• Managing the TMS Division’s Principal Designer Advisor Forum and leading on certain tasks and initiatives to improve health and safety performance across our project portfolio.
• Ensuring compliance with internal processes to discharge our responsibilities under the 2015 CDM Regulations.
• Promoting industry leading best practice in the reduction and elimination of hazards in our design, above the legislation requirements.
• Leading a safety and health in design culture, challenging designers to produce optimal designs.
• Innovating new ways of working in the BIM environment to capture and communicate hazards and risks.
• Working closely with Project Managers, Technical Leads and designers to guide them with producing designs that are safe to build and maintain.
• Holding design health and safety collaboration workshops to manage project hazards with designers, construction and maintenance teams.
• Reviewing positive design interventions and producing safety moments for knowledge sharing.
• Supporting Bid Managers in preparing responses to Health and Safety aspects of bids.
• Providing support /advice to Client bodies to assist in discharging their responsibilities.
• Producing periodical CDM performance reports for Project Managers.
• Arranging and managing lessons learned sessions.
• Being part of, and actively contributing to various client Principal Designer working groups.

Ensuring the TMS division are continually updated on industry updates relevant to design safety, through producing bulletins, alerts and CDM resource centre updates.


Candidate Specification
As a senior professional, you have extensive experience in discharging the role of Principal Designer Advisor on transportation and highways/roads schemes in the UK. Additionally, you will have a full appreciation of health and safety legislation and how it applies to the engineering process. You will be willing to travel to client site or other offices when required.

You will also be able to demonstrate the following:

Essential academic / professional qualifications / experience:
• NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety.
• Degree qualified or equivalent experience
• Previous experience in highways and the transportation environment with good knowledge of the hazards posed in construction and maintenance.
• Experience in applying Health and Safety legislation throughout the design process.
• Previous Principal Designer Advisor roles on transportation schemes, and preferably highways/roads schemes.
• Experience in major projects and leading multi-discipline design teams in design health and safety.

Essential competencies and skills:
• Team leadership and co-ordination skills.
• Ability to develop safe by design project strategies and execution plans.
• Working knowledge of highway design standards (DMRB) and specification (MCHW).
• Ability to develop strong professional relationships with clients and partners.
• A confident communicator with good verbal and writing ability.
• Strong presentation skills.
• Self-motivated and enthusiastic with excellent teamwork abilities.
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritise workload effectively.
• Experienced and confident in the use of Microsoft Office applications and Microsoft Teams.

Desirable qualifications:
Although not essential, it would be beneficial if you are degree qualified in Civil Engineering (or a related discipline) and are also a chartered member of a relevant professional institute. Knowledge of NEC contracts and quality requirements would also be an advantage.
