About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of role

The Energy Unit, specifically the Transmission & Distribution division are recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team. This role is to support client projects from inception and master planning through concept and detailed design stages all the way to commissioning and final completion.

Our work is varied and spans across all forms of Renewable Power Generation, Network Design, Grid Connections, Net Zero Carbon aspirations and Estate Management Planning. We also provide detailed design solutions in the renewables, aviation, data centre, healthcare, nuclear and defence sectors.

Typical projects will include working from a client brief to produce tender specifications, calculations, designs and drawings for new or renovated 11kV and 33kV switchgear networks and renewable energy connections with HV cable connections, transformers, diesel generators, load banks, LV interfaces, SCADA interfaces and protection schemes.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will provide technical solutions and project leadership in the production of electrical designs for major electrical and multi-disciplinary infrastructure works. You will be expected to become familiar with the company procedures and provide technical expertise and contributions to bids and proposals in addition to project planning, project delivery and execution to a high standard. You will manage engineering projects and deliverables ensuring they meet the client’s expectations and applicable statutory and regulatory specification, on time and within budget. You will also support and contribute to the development of junior staff and graduates

Typical activities include:

  • Leading site surveys
  • Ensure project deliverables and scope are clear
  • Understand procurement and contract awards such as NEC PSC
  • LV and MV network configuration and advice on resilience issues.
  • Input into the network configuration and understanding of operations scenarios and impacts.
  • LV and MV (up to 33kV) network design.
  • LV and MV cable sizing, routing and termination.
  • LV and MV substation design layouts.
  • LV and MV substation main equipment operations and specifications.
  • Understanding and interpretation of client standards and DNO regulations and standards.
  • Earthing designs including understanding of design, modelling and calculations for step, touch and transfer potential.
  • Protection requirements
  • Arc flash requirement
  • Review of design submissions within the team against client scope.
  • Design reviews.
  • Have an ability to co-ordinate across project disciplines both internal and external.
  • Be competent in the use of MS packages.
  • Be aware of and eventually contribute to bid procedures and internal governance.
  • Be aware of procurement, construction and commissioning activities.

Candidate specification:

Working as part of a Team and reporting to the Project Principal or Principal Engineer, we are ideally looking for candidates who are Chartered, along with:

  • Professionally qualified in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Proven skills, capabilities and experience in the sector areas mentioned above
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential as the role will require preparation of specifications and reports.
  • Co-ordinate with multi disciplines both internal and external.
  • Demonstrable experience within electrical project engineering, with focus on installations from LV up to 11kV / 33kV.
  • Be able to travel in the UK and overseas if required,
  • Must have initiative, self-motivation and the confidence to make decisions.
