About the division

The Water Consultancy Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to water and wastewater challenges, offering fantastic opportunities to get involved in diverse and technically challenging work. We have an exceptionally strong record in providing climate risk and resilience services and expertise to the UK and international water sectors, as well as supporting clients in other infrastructure sectors. Our clients are increasingly demanding better quantification of physical climate risks and we are continually innovating to support them. We have developed weather generators as well as our own digital tool to interrogate and process UKCP18 data. Our portfolio includes the major UK water companies as well as asset owners in the transport, buildings and energy sectors. We are regularly involved in climate resilience and engineering projects around the world supporting developers and lenders, and we undertake climate change risk assessments, impact modelling and climate resilience advisory projects at a local, regional or national scale.

We are seeking a Senior Climate Risk Consultant to join our technical team across the UK in repose to the growing demand for climate resilience services. As a Senior Climate Risk Consultant, you will be a key figure in the UK Asset Management and Infrastructure Planning team, supporting climate resilience activities in the water and other infrastructure sectors, working closely with a network of climate practitioners across the Group. You will act as technical leader in projects, being responsible for their technical direction and quality, whether applying innovative thinking to new or established services or developing your own concepts from scratch. Alongside your technical role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in project management and business development through engaging with clients.

You will have particular responsibility for:

  • Obtaining, analysing, and interpreting climate data in support of climate change risk assessments, impact modelling, and adaptation planning
  • Devising quantitative approaches to assessing physical risks and failure mechanisms as a result of climate change
  • Leading on the provision of climate data and analysis to engineering projects
  • Managing climate resilience advisory projects, delivering to budget, programme, and quality standards
  • Working collaboratively across disciplines and infrastructure sectors to ensure efficient delivery
  • Producing and reviewing climate data sets, risk assessments, and adaptation plans – including written reports
  • Assisting with winning work, including managing climate resilience proposals, and development of new business within the asset management and investment planning team and across the wider practice
  • Providing technical guidance, support, and training to junior colleagues and assisting, where practicable, in the mentoring and development of others.

Candidate specification

We are looking for someone with a proven track record in the field and with a passion for learning and innovating in this fast-moving discipline. In addition, you will need to have:

  • Degree level qualification in civil engineering, meteorology, physical geography, mathematics, or other related discipline
  • Chartered with an appropriate professional body
  • Experience in analysing and interpreting UKCP18 and CMIP5/6 projection data
  • Proven track record in delivering quantitative climate change risk assessment and impact modelling in the water and infrastructure sectors
  • Able to guide and mentor junior staff
  • Excellent communication and written skills.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience in coding
  • Asset management or engineering background with understanding of failure mechanisms
  • Understanding of engineering requirements on infrastructure projects
  • Project management experience.
