We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and​ advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of role
We are a global engineering, management and development consultancy focused on guiding our clients through many of the planet’s most intricate challenges. We are looking for a professionally qualified Principal Engineer to join our aviation team. We are particularly looking for a Civil Engineer with experience in airfield engineering design. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team, actively participating in the delivery of airport engineering assignments across the world and for a large variety of airports and clients. The main responsibility for this role will be to lead the design of the civil elements of Airfield Engineering projects, covering geometric design, pavement design, grading, earthworks, drainage, and services design. The successful candidate will also be a proven work winner with well-developed professional networks.

We provide planning, engineering and analytical services for all sizes of airports: ranging from small regional facilities to some of the biggest and best airports in the world, including London Heathrow, Hong Kong International Airport, Singapore Changi and New York JFK. As one of the world's most experienced aviation consultancies, our client portfolio includes airports, governments, civil aviation authorities, airport companies, equity investors and providers of debt finance.

As such, it is not uncommon that during your time with Mott MacDonald you may be required to travel overseas or be seconded to another office for project related work.

As part of your role, you are likely to get involved with the following tasks:
• Provide leadership and line management support to Senior and Airfield Engineers in their development of Airfield designs for airports in the UK and around the world;
• Prepare airfield pavement designs
• Analyse geotechnical and soil investigation information and request necessary tests
• Undertake geometric and grading design of Runways, Taxiways, Aprons, service roads, etc.
• Undertake storm water drainage and water management system design for airports
• Oversee the production of Civil 3D Design of civil works and infrastructure and 3D models for airfield projects
• Help to coordinate design across multiple disciplines including pavement engineering, structural engineering, etc.
• Lead the production of adequate specifications for civil works
• Lead the development of feasible, logical and efficient work phasing proposals to carry out the construction works
• Undertake civil works design and design reviews covering all stages of design
• Lead the engagement and management of subconsultants
• Lead the preparation of tender documentation and in the support of clients during procurement processes for Airfield Civil Works
• Lead the preparation of methodologies, design proposals, resources estimation, etc. for preparation of bids
• Undertake line management duties
• Lead visits to Airfields in the UK and overseas in the monitoring of construction works and in the production of reports on progress
• Candidate must be able to travel frequently to UK and Internationally for site visits and to visit MM UK Offices (particularly Croydon)

Candidate Specification

We are looking for a flexible and motivated senior and experienced professional with a genuine passion for the aviation industry and a desire to make a difference in the world, with a special appreciation for sustainability.

To apply for this position, you must have the following:
• A degree in civil engineering or a degree that includes elements of Civil Engineering.
• Be professionally qualified by a recognised Engineering Institution such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent
• Fluency in English – knowledge of other languages will be valued as an advantage

Demonstrable professional experience in Airfield Engineering Design or one or more technical field(s) within Civil Engineering: pavement design, drainage design, Highways and/or utilities design. will be favourably considered.

• Excellent verbal communication skills, which allow you to confidently liaise with clients and colleagues.
• Excellent written communication and attention to detail, being able to oversee the production of accurate technical drawings and professional reports.
• Proficient in Word, PowerPoint and Excel (Power BI desirable).
• Understanding of the use of AutoCAD and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D. Experienced with other software including AviPlan, Infraworks, Navisworks, Revit and/or 3D visualisation tools will be favourably considered.
