Job Description

MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) is the UK’s largest consumer website, offering free, independent, and editorially-led information to millions about saving money. MSE’s mission is simple – helping people reduce their bills and achieve financial justice. Every month, around 12 million users visit MSE, and more than 9 million subscribers receive a weekly email filled with exclusive deals, tips, and guides on saving money.

But what really makes us stand-out from the crowd is the Editorial Code, which lies at the heart of everything we do. Regardless of your role, it’s everybody’s job to champion the consumer - and that makes us a truly unique, exciting and rewarding place to work. If you are inspired by what we do or see yourself as a passionate consumer champion, and have the grit and enthusiasm along with the skills we seek, a career in MSE might just be the right career step you are looking for.

MSE’s Communications team ensures that consumers across the UK have access to MSE’s personal finance advice. With more than 2,000 of pieces of coverage a month and press moments that reach millions, MSE’s PR machine works hard to make sure consumers know their rights, understand their finances and know how to make positive changes towards their financial wellbeing. The team supports broadcast interviews with our roster of expert spokespeople – including Martin Lewis CBE – as well as print, digital and audio media. PR is also a vital tool in MSE’s influencing and advocacy strategy – the media are key stakeholders, helping to deliver our campaign messages, with strategic placements helping to drive changes to legislation, regulation and policy.

How you’ll spend your day

  • Overseeing the operations of MSE’s public relations output and press office.

  • Leadership and development of the overall PR strategy for MSE, along with individual projects or campaigns – working closely with the Social Media and Creative Content Manager, Deputy Editor and Campaigns Lead.

  • Supporting MSE’s brand health and trusted reputation – maintaining press policies and conventions, media training spokespeople and devising key messages, as well as being the front line for crises (if needed).

  • Working with MSE’s founder, Martin Lewis, on high-value press opportunities, supported by the Campaigns Lead.

  • Coordinating and project-managing proactive PR content – including planning, press releases, alerts, briefings, design/video assets.

  • Collaborating with MSE’s other editorial teams to support campaigning, investigations and editorial features/analysis.

  • Spotting newsworthy trends, curating content and creating compelling, targeted stories for PR alongside your team.

  • Working with external stakeholders and media to distribute MSE’s independent help to appropriate and relevant communities.

  • Evaluating and tracking MSE’s PR performance, with both overall KPIs and individual campaign objectives in mind.

  • Line-managing a team of two in the press office – with accountability for editing their work.

  • Managing the PR budget and suppliers.

  • Keeping up with latest PR industry developments, best practice and ethics in order to achieve brilliant outcomes for consumers.

What value you’ll bring to the role

  • Experience building and driving a PR strategy and analysing/evaluating PR performance.

  • Experience and confidence dealing with senior stakeholders, as well as handling requests from all media types.

  • Proficiency in managing multiple projects and using supporting PR software eg media monitoring (or similar).

  • Demonstrable examples of times you have worked to achieve communications objectives using PR, eg achieving a campaign for change, driving website traffic, increasing issues awareness, driving behavioural change etc.

  • Someone genuinely invested in the UK media landscape, with a broad awareness of media opportunities and key programming. You’ll likely be someone who reads/watches/listens to a range of news content daily.

  • Integrated comms experience – where PR dovetails with wider external teams eg, advertising, social, campaigning, digital, SEO.

  • Thoughtfulness about how PR forms part of the wider campaigning, reputation and brand objectives.

  • As this role involves copy editing, we are ideally looking for someone with a knack for storytelling, with a high level of English literacy – though we welcome neurodiverse candidates and can make reasonable adjustments.

  • Attention to detail, factual accuracy, logic and critical thinking skills. MSE is editorially led and consumer-first – this means that we only communicate information after scrutiny.

  • Awareness and understanding of MSE’s role in the UK personal finance landscape.

  • A growth mindset – someone who contributes new ideas and is a self-starter when it comes to professional development. You’ll be someone who takes an active interest in the communications industry and networks regularly.

  • A genuine interest and passion for UK consumer issues and personal finance.

Nice to have:

  • Team line management experience – though this could be a first line management opportunity for the right candidate.

  • Experience working in collaboration with other editorial-led teams, eg, news, website, social media.

  • Experience working in or with government departments

  • Examples of PR work which supports campaigning for change – eg, to change the law, to attract political interest, to create behavioural change.

  • Experience of crisis communications.

What rewards are on offer?

  • 27 days holiday (rising to 30) + bank holidays

  • Pension up to 6% employer contribution

  • Bonus scheme

  • Enhanced shared parental leave - six months paid for both parents

  • Digital Doctor on demand

  • Work from anywhere scheme – two weeks per year

  • Financial coaching

  • Mental health platform access
