Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. The Datacenter Engineering Electrical Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs in the EMEA region.

This position is a Subject Matter Expert providing key input to other organizations and stakeholders. The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Candidate will be responsible for the technical review, analysis and coordinating the delivery of complex Datacenter Electrical systems, associated controls, and overall topology.

These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities:

The position is for a Subject Matter Expert who provides crucial input to other organizations and stakeholders. The candidate must be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in data centre electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations. Responsibilities include managing, reviewing, and coordinating the delivery of complex data centre electrical systems, power distribution systems, and backup power systems. The candidate will ensure consultants adhere to Microsoft standards and perform technical reviews and analyses of leased and colocation data centres from external providers for compliance with Microsoft requirements.

  • Collaborate with the Global Electrical Team to understand and develop the data centre (DC) electrical designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) for new DC project build-outs.
  • Lead & guide and oversee consultants in designing and coordinating electrical systems with other disciplines, as well as managing associated power requirements and overall electrical topology for our data centre projects.
  • Leads electrical workgroups with representatives from consulting firms and key stakeholders within Microsoft.
  • Oversee all power system designs throughout the design phases, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and on-site installation. Address and resolve issues raised by construction teams and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate extensively with the procurement team, manufacturers, as well as global and local engineering teams to provide the necessary electrical solutions for each project.
  • Accountable for developing specifications and drawings, detailing the sequence of operations for electrical systems, as well as creating comprehensive drawings and specifications for our electrical topology.
  • Assist the Operations team in troubleshooting electrical failures and collaborate with operations personnel and equipment vendors to resolve issues.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Technical engineering experience
  • OR bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related field and indepth technical engineering experience
  • OR master’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology or related field and indepth technical engineering experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience as a lead engineer with design, construction, operation or maintenance of large scale and complex electrical engineering systems (Data Centres, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries)
  • Candidate must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and maintain high quality standards.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches.
  • Detailed understanding of relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution system, power and distribution transformers, earthing and switching.
  • Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations.
  • Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits.
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data centre environments.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and control systems related to data centre environments.
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions.
  • Experience with power system analysis and engineering software packages.

Additional or Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field and indepth of technical engineering experience

OR

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field and indepth technical engineering experience.
