Job Description

For our Microsoft Research Cambridge (England, UK) location we are seeking Research Interns for a multi-disciplinary project at the intersection of generative AI and human creativity. We encourage applications from all candidates with experience at the intersection of generative AI and (broadly) visual arts, filmmaking, storytelling, game development, design, user research or related areas. If you are excited about exploring challenges that arise in creative uses of current AI technology and about working with experts from multiple disciplines to address some of these challenges, then we’d love to hear from you.

Candidates must be enrolled in full-time study at a university and must be available for a 12-16 week internship in summer 2025. This is an exceptional opportunity to work closely with a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary team. The focus and scope of the project considers the team’s direction as well as successful candidates’ experience and research interests.

This posting will be active for 30 days, and all candidates applying within this time are considered on an equal basis. When submitting your application, include your CV with a list of publications or a portfolio of creative works as an attachment. You will be invited to submit contact details for a professional reference – these are optional but recommended. For more information about the post, please feel free to email Katja Hofmann at katja.hofmann@microsoft.com.

Responsibilities

• In collaboration with your mentor and a diverse team (for example, including designers, engineers, and researchers), contribute to ideation, building prototypes, formulating and addressing research questions, and to translating your results into actionable insights that are relevant to potential applications of generative AI to creative endeavors

• Write code and contribute to shared codebases to prototype ideas or artefacts to translate ideas into a concrete form that supports further exploration or iteration

• Distil the developed insights into effective communications, such as a research paper, prototype, demonstration, presentation, performance or another appropriate format to reach internal and external technical and general audiences.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters or PhD program.

• Ability to develop creative insights and/or artefacts at the intersection of generative AI and creativity, as demonstrated by a relevant publication, artwork, portfolio or similar relevant format

• Strong understanding relevant generative AI models and their capabilities, including recent research in this space

• Hands-on experience in creating tangible artefacts, prototypes or demonstrations, including relevant (software) engineering skills

• Effective communication skills, as evidenced in a relevant communication to scientific, creative, or general audiences • Ability to work in a collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment
