What is PN?

Pet Nutrition (PN) is the most vibrant category in the FMCG sector. As we work to transform this exciting category, a new program, Shepherd, has been mobilized by the Mars Pet Nutrition (PN) leadership team. Shepherd is focused on the accelerated creation and implementation of a next generation ERP for Pet Nutrition. Much more than a simple “Lift and Shift,” this program will undertake a major process simplification and harmonization scope as we digitally transform our business.

What is Shepherd?

Shepherd is focused primarily on four mega process areas: Finance, Source to Pay (procurement and vendor mgmt.), Plan to Fulfill (supply chain planning, manufacturing and distribution), and Lead to Cash (order processing and payment). This transformation requires thought leadership, quality decision making, deep technical know-how, and an ability to navigate complex business challenges while applying a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to each of these mega processes.

What is the SME role in Shepherd?

As part of Shepherd, a new role has been created to lead the representation of sustainability business requirements for the Source to Pay during the ERP transformation: The PN Sustainability SME is an individual who owns an end-to-end process across functional silos, geography, and business unit boundaries. It includes radical process simplification and cross-segment collaboration in standardization efforts to build an agile, resilient, and digitized supply chain in Mars.

The Sustainability SME is accountable for working directly with the systems integrator, internal sustainability teams, and regional Supply Chain units in designing the global process template for their respective process area, including the future needs of the business, system capabilities, and external best practices. They are responsible for the development of the business case, ensure they give given the necessary support to GPL and GPO for the unit buy-in and sign-off on business architecture and process design.

Focus areas & related functions:

This role is a business sustainability role, specifically focused on data collection, process definition, and goal achievement across the key sustainability areas of influence: Social (Thriving People), Packaging, and Environmental (GHG, water, land use, etc.).

This role will focus mainly on business sustainability requirements and their integration into the broader process simplification and definition under the Source to Pay process (inclusive of raw materials, packaging, external manufacturing, and inbound logistics, with the following functions in scope:

  • Plan to optimize sourcing and procurement, Source to Contract , Procure to Receipt, Request to Resolution, Invoice to Pay, Master Data Governance, Manufacturing Execution, Quality, Warehousing and Logistics collaboration: cross-functional interdependencies, collaboration framework and information flows.

The PN Sustainability SME will cooperate with consultants that will drive the work with ERP transition, as well as cross segment teams that will be responsible for transition in their segments across all geographies. Collaboration will also be necessary within Pet Nutrition different functional areas identified as transition scope. After transition design is completed, collaboration will be required with regional deployment teams. This role is the enabler providing critical support for change towards supply chain and source to pay process efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

1. Sustainability Needs & Strategy: 30%

  • Deep understanding & expertise of Pet Nutrition sustainability requirements and targets, focused in the space of raw materials, packing, logistics, and external manufacturing, but not limited to further supply chain & manufacturing business needs
  • Clear view of required internal and external data to support sustainability-based collection to drive current state assessments and visibility of implemented improvement activities
  • Connection with central and regional sustainability teams to outline scope, understand pain points, and ensure regional execution success for future state process design

2. Process Design: 40%

  • Analyse internal and external leading practices and benchmarks, developing a transformation roadmap based on agreed KPI performance for the processes.
  • Connection to future state process design across all areas of Source to Pay, with a specific focus of understanding where sustainability data originates and/or is required to exist
  • Actively partner with other S2P process SMEs and GPLs to implement requirements through a set of standard processes to achieve clear data collection and visibility
  • Communicate and recommend process needs across all mega-process areas to enable business success for sustainability targets
  • Partner with appropriate teams to propose, design, and recommend a digital tool strategy for sustainability data collection, where standardized core processes do not fully cover business needs

3. Program Engagement & Implementation 30%

  • Partner with program SIs & BIs, as well as internal Petcare SMEs and GPLs, to validate process design documents (PDDs) in readiness for regional implementation
  • Regularly engage with regional Pet Nutrition teams to understand current pain points, validate recommended process adjustments, and leverage expertise
  • Selectively engage with key suppliers to validate hypothesis, test solutions, and collaboratively assure success for future process design choices
  • Partner with the DT team and Deployment teams to develop deployment roadmaps and manage the Global template for PN S2P.

Context and Scope

The role is required to support Global ERP transformation and Radical Process Simplification initiative for Pet Nutrition. The PN Sustainability SME will play an integral part in identifying opportunities for reducing environmental impact through procurement practices, materials sourcing, and logistics, while also ensuring compliance with both internal sustainability targets and external regulatory requirements.

The role is a full-time role assigned to the project and will be active till the end of the project.

Knowledge / Experience

Relationship Management and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Customer focused with demonstrated ability to form productive relationships with business leaders, DT personnel, and project leaders.
  • Experience in working with multiple stakeholders and managing trade-off decisions.
  • Ability to educate leadership & staff, working across multiple levels.
  • Senior stakeholder communications experience.
  • Proven track record to get things done in a matrixed organization – including the ability to influence without authority.

Program Management and Business Transformation:

  • Proven track record of delivering results in Business-led transformations and IT Program management.
  • Deep understanding of business drivers/processes and ability to relate segment priorities to associated technology.
  • Learning agility and desire to learn new processes, technology, and business capabilities.

Procurement and Sustainability Expertise:

  • 5+ years of experience in sourcing and procurement, with a focus on raw materials, packaging, and/or external manufacturing
  • 5+ years of experience in leading corporate sustainability initiatives through process design, data collection, digital tool development, and internal/external engagement programs
  • Deep understanding of the end-to-end Source to Pay process, challenges, and value drivers.
  • Thorough understanding of interlinkages and interdependencies of source to pay with other business functions including Finance, Quality, Supply chain, Logistics, and others.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers.

Problem Solving and Analytical Skills:

  • Strong problem analysis, negotiating, and influencing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English.
