Senior Toxicologist & Chemical Risk Manager

Location - Consideration to all Mars sites

The Senior Toxicologist and Chemical Risk Manager will be integral to the Food Safety team, enhancing toxicology capabilities and supporting chemical risk management for food contact materials, ingredients, and sustainability initiatives. This role is pivotal in ensuring safety, compliance, and sustainability across all segments of packaging materials and ingredients. It will collaborate closely with key partners to assess and mitigate chemical risks and will play a significant role in building organizational capabilities.

What are we looking for?

  • Advanced degree in Toxicology, Food Science, Chemistry, or a related field, with expertise in chemical risk assessment and food contact materials.

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in packaging safety, regulatory compliance, and chemical risk management, ideally within the food or consumer goods industry. In-depth knowledge of global food contact regulations, emerging packaging technologies, and sustainability trends.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific data into actionable business insights and recommendations.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage and influence cross-functional teams and external partners.

  • Demonstrated leadership in strategic initiatives and a commitment to building a culture of safety, compliance, and innovation.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence senior leaders and their teams across all segments, all regions and across multiple functions

  • Strong planning and project management skills (including remote management), and ability to manage multiple deadlines and change management of business processes

  • Ability to travel up to 20% (international also), support global/time zones and fluent in English.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Chemical Risk Assessment: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments of packaging materials, focusing on chemical safety and regulatory compliance. Evaluate potential chemical hazards from conventional and innovative packaging solutions, including sustainable and recycled materials, ensuring they align with Mars' safety standards.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Horizon Scanning: Collaborate with the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs (SRA) team to monitor global regulatory landscapes and emerging scientific trends related to food contact materials. Lead proactive horizon scanning efforts to identify and communicate potential impacts on Mars' packaging strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance and strategic readiness.

  • Sustainability Support: Partner with sustainability teams to assess and guide the development of safe and compliant circular packaging solutions. Provide expert advice on incorporating sustainable materials while managing chemical risks, supporting Mars' sustainability objectives.

  • Technical Expertise and Guidance: Act as the technical authority on packaging safety and chemical risk management, offering expert guidance on toxicological assessments and safety standards. Support the development and implementation of best practices, standards, and tools to maintain the integrity and compliance of packaging materials across segments.

  • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with R&D, SRA, quality, and segment teams to align packaging safety initiatives across the business. Foster robust cross-functional and external collaborations to drive continuous improvement in food safety and chemical risk management.

  • Community of Practice Engagement: Actively participate in the Toxicology Community of Practice to ensure that food contact risk management is well represented. Share knowledge, insights, and best practices to strengthen the community's overall capability in managing chemical risks associated with food contact materials.

  • Capability Building: Lead and support capability-building initiatives within the organization, providing training and development opportunities to enhance the technical expertise of teams working on packaging safety and chemical risk management.

  • Risk Communication and Documentation: Provide stakeholders with clear, effective communication on packaging safety and chemical risk issues, including leadership and segment teams. Ensure thorough documentation of risk assessments, safety decisions, and regulatory actions.

  • Innovation and Leadership: Lead or support strategic initiatives focused on packaging safety and chemical risk management, driving innovation and continuous improvement. Influence business strategies by integrating scientific and regulatory insights into packaging development and risk management processes.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, if eligible, including variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Eligibility for these additional elements depend on the position offered and the employee’s work schedule (i.e., part-time schedule, store associate). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.
