Animal Trainer - Waltham on the Wolds

Onsite role.

Are you passionate about animal welfare and training?

Join our team at Waltham as an Animal Trainer, where you'll play a vital role in maintaining the highest standards of animal care, training, and enrichment. This position is key to developing a pet population fit for our research program while upholding our caring science approach.

As part of the animal trainer team, you will not only hone your expertise in animal training, behaviour, and welfare, but also build relationships across teams, motivate others, and deliver results that contribute to both the site and the wider business.

What are we looking for?

  • A good general education (GCSE grade C or above in maths, English, and science or equivalent).

  • Higher qualifications (A-level, HND) are desirable.

  • A relevant degree, e.g. BSc in Animal Behaviour or a related field is preferable.

  • In-depth knowledge of learning theory and animal training principles.

  • Excellent understanding of feline and canine communication and behaviour.

  • Practical experience in animal training.

  • Flexible working style, strong communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver trial-related training to pets of all species (canine and feline), ages, and breeds.

  • Assist with regulated research procedures by holding or cueing pets for position.

  • Perform non-regulated research procedures, such as urine collection.

  • Train life and core skills to puppies and kittens.

  • Record training progress data accurately in relevant databases.

  • Identify new behaviours in pets that support research opportunities and develop relevant training protocols.

  • Continuously develop your professional expertise in pet training.

  • Provide direct training for pets with specific needs.

  • Train and support associates and contract staff in animal handling, husbandry, and training.

  • Implement animal welfare and behaviour programs, acting as a source of expertise in these areas.

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of animal welfare standards, ensuring outstanding care for our animals.
