Job Description

With a strong emphasis on networking and building new content partnerships for Emerald, the Publishing Development Manager role will embed itself within target researcher communities, understanding their needs, becoming an ambassador and amplifying the voices of those communities. You will use your deep knowledge of the research ecosystem to co-create new content including open access and hybrid journals and explore alternative types of research output.

As a team we are aligned to goal areas focused on the UN SDGs and we prioritise content that addresses societal challenges and imbalances, playing our role in creating an equitable, healthy and sustainable ecosystem.

Location: We perform at our best when we feel trusted and are able to choose an approach to working that suits us best, which is why we are a remote-first company. However, we also believe in face to face collaboration, and our UK colleagues meet once a month for team time and quarterly for company get togethers in our Leeds office, so we ask that you be within a commutable distance that you are comfortable with in order to attend the office on those occasions.

Day to day we’ll trust you to:

  • Build networks of researchers and their corresponding institutions to gather intelligence and partnerships to support publishing and commercial strategy
  • Build pipeline of new Gold open access and hybrid journal launches
  • Proactively develop new journal launches to meet targets around output, revenue and market position
  • Collaborate with brand and marketing colleagues to create and promote mission campaigns focusing on content aligned to SDGs
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration and co-creation to position Emerald as publisher of choice
  • Gather market and community intelligence to support wider strategic initiatives focusing on open access, innovation and equity in publishing
  • Proactively manage journal editorial teams to ensure engagement and diversity
  • Identify opportunities for alternative content outputs to support researchers in reaching new audiences
  • Foster deep relationships with our ‘creators’ supporting them during the publication process and beyond
  • Explore new ways to deliver our impact vision, including through opportunities for co-creation and collaboration
  • Ensure great customer experience and service is at the centre of our work
  • Campus calling, networking and attendance at key events and conferences to expand Emerald’s presence in researcher communities
  • Identify opportunities for thought leadership/speaker slots at key subject conferences.

You’ll need to have:

Skills:

  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence cross-functionally at all levels
  • Advanced commissioning skills
  • Advanced problem-solving skills
  • Ability to identify commercial and strategic opportunities

  • Analytical skills
  • Strong negotiating skills
  • Relationship development and management

Knowledge:

  • An in-depth knowledge of Emerald’s products
  • Publishing experience, marketing experience or work experience within a commercial environment
  • A proactive interest in the academic publishing environment

Behaviours & Attributes:

  • Self-starter with high personal drive and motivation
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others, enabling others to perform to their potential
  • Depth knowledge of subject communities and publishing practices
  • Actively seeks opportunities to be involved in projects as part of personal/career development
  • Actively encourages and supports others to drive their own development, acting as coach and mentor where appropriate
  • Willingness to travel
