Job Description
This is a fantastic opportunity for a Commissioning Editor - Journals to join us and play a key role in our Content Acquisition team.
Reporting into a Journals Commissioning Lead, the successful candidate will join a dedicated journals team, managing and developing an allocated journals portfolio, actively commissioning content and focusing on increasing our output aimed at delivering real world societal impact. Playing an active part in the wider team, you will work to ensure that Emerald is a leading voice for our chosen communities.
The role will involve commissioning content, expanding networks within relevant subject communities and acting as an advocate for Emerald, as well as creating subject, domain and community development plans with a focus on target institutions or geographies, involvement in project work, and building a strong pipeline of journal acquisition/launch/partnership opportunities.
Location: We perform at our best when we feel trusted and are able to choose an approach to working that suits us best, which is why we are a remote-first company. However, we also believe in face to face collaboration, and our UK colleagues meet once a month for team time and quarterly for company get togethers in our Leeds office, so we ask that you be within a commutable distance that you are comfortable with in order to attend the office on those occasions.
Day to day we’ll trust you to:
- Support the strategic development plan of the portfolio, building a strong pipeline of journal articles and other relevant digital content
- Commission and deliver content to agreed targets aligned with strategic priorities
• Work with stakeholders to ensure the delivery of a community outreach plan for your subject area - Proactively manage Editorial teams and Editorial Boards to ensure journal health, and work to increase representation of diverse voices that are reflective of author and readership
- Actively use systems and reports that will help you meet objectives for attention, citations, impact factor, market share in articles, author and reviewer satisfaction, and publication speed
You’ll need to have:
- Proven journals publishing experience working to strategic priorities and portfolio targets
- Excellent working knowledge of the rapidly evolving academic publishing environment – for example, open research
- Advanced relationship management/building skills, and an ability to work cross-functionally
- A passion for research aligned to delivering real societal impact
- The drive to expand your existing network and act as an advocate for Emerald
- The ability to embrace innovation and new ways of working

Roles are advertised at a benchmarked market median rate. Offers will be made within a range of the median, depending on skills and experience.
