Senior Risk Analyst
About the Organisation
Centrica Energy Marketing & Trading (EM&T) is the trading arm of Centrica. We trade LNG, gas, power, and energy attributes - and connect independent producers, suppliers and corporate off-takers in the wholesale energy markets.
About the Team
The EM&T Market Risk team is responsible for identifying, evaluating, measuring, and controlling all market risks EM&T has exposure to through its portfolio of physical and contractual assets and trading activities. Its role is to proactively provide actionable insight on specific and portfolio-level risks, both existing and potential, to all stakeholders to ensure EM&T achieves its commercial, financial, and strategic objectives while controlling for potential downside losses with a robust and resilient risk control framework.
The team ensures the business operates in a controlled manner under its risk mandate and established governance frameworks. It also provides an independent and constructive challenge to front-office trading strategies and advice on market risk management strategies and methods for new business ventures and proposals.
About the Role
Reporting to the Risk Manager of Control and Governance, you will confidently analyse and monitor market risks and recommend market risk measurement methodologies, processes and policies whilst closely interacting with the front office. You’ll also produce market risk reports as required and maintain awareness of principal market risks and emerging issues. You will support the Head of Market Risk and Risk Managers to promote a culture of sound risk management on the trading floor and across the business.
This role would suit an established Snr. Risk Analyst seeking a fresh challenge or an experienced Risk Analyst seeking the next step in their career.
Responsibilities and Deliverables
Identify, assess, report and monitor market risks across a diversified commodity portfolio which includes analysing trading and hedging strategies and assessing material weaknesses or overlooked risks
Produces market risk reports and ad hoc market risk analysis. Reconciles and prepares commentary on movements in market risk measures, escalating potential market risk issues
Confidently answers questions relating to market risk reports.
Provide timely risk insights into the trading portfolio to senior management by being a local point-of-contact for running scenario analyses within the applicable market risk frameworks
Develop timely market risk analysis using simulation based modelling and other quantitative methods, e.g., stress scenarios and path risk assessments
Work with relevant business teams to implement and test new business and product frameworks. Integrate changes and deliver improvements to market risk policies, processes and systems
Maintain and share strong knowledge of trading portfolios and stay abreast of developments in the energy markets
Deputise for the Risk Manager – Control and Governance and provides guidance to Risk Analysts
Working with the Head of Market Risk and team to deliver the Market Risk transformation plan
About You
5+ experience in an Energy/ Commodity Trading firm or Investment Bank
Degree(s) in quantitative/technical subject (sciences, maths, stats, engineering, economics) and/or professional certification (FRM, ERP, CFA, CQF)
Knowledge of physical and financial wholesale energy market fundamentals and traded instruments, with a focus on LNG ideally, or physical oil, coal, and associated freight markets
Extensive knowledge and experience in working with risk management methods and techniques - Value at Risk, Profit at Risk (PaR), Stress Testing, Scenario Analysis, Option Pricing, P&L analysis etc.
Can demonstrate strong commercial awareness and provide constructive challenge to Front Office and trading strategies
Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving and root-cause identification skills
Confidence, presence, resilience and determination to succeed in a dynamic and demanding business environment
A robust independent mind in executing responsibilities alongside maintaining effective working relationships across the organisation
Proficient in the use of Office365 and any of the following: VBA, SQL, Power BI, Python R, Matlab, C#, C++ .Net, Alteryx
