Job Description

We are Centrica! We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising a cleaner, greener future. Working here is #MoreThanACareer - we’re powered by purpose. Together we can make an impact that will truly change tomorrow. Whether you’re developing cutting-edge green tech, helping customers on the front line or simplifying operations behind the scenes.

Your work here isn’t just a job – it’s a mission. We all play a vital role in energising a greener, fairer future.

The Senior Business Development Manager (12 month fixed-term contract) will generate leads and implement sales strategies for high-value Industrial and Commercial (I&C) clients in the UK and Ireland, focusing on the Public Sector. The ideal candidate will have a hunter mentality, a strong drive to close deals, and a proven background in business development and sales management within the Public Sector energy market.

This role involves building relationships at the C-suite level, developing growth strategies, and providing consultative solutions that deliver customer value. The manager will play a key role in achieving growth targets for Centrica Business Solutions (CBS).

Additionally, the manager will network with Public Sector groups and trade bodies to ensure CBS remains a leader in energy solutions in the UK and Ireland, while building a robust business pipeline that contributes to financial performance. Collaboration with internal teams—such as Marketing, Propositions, Bid Management, Solution Development, and Operations—will be essential for strategic customer management, forecasting, and performance management.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead Generation: Identify and pursue new leads for hydrogen-ready CHP and large-scale solar projects, focusing on both funded and capital solutions.
  • Public Sector Engagement: Develop multi-tech solutions for public sector clients, building relationships with key stakeholders at the Board and Estates levels.
  • Sales Strategy: Define and close new sales opportunities, using a structured bid/no bid process and leveraging Centrica’s capabilities for innovative solutions.
  • Networking and Representation: Attend trade shows, exhibitions, and networking events to target new opportunities and represent the business.
  • Collaboration and Support: Work with internal teams, including Legal and Commercial, to ensure optimal deal structuring and support project delivery.
  • Pipeline Management: Maintain a Salesforce database for tracking opportunities and contract wins, providing regular KPI reports and forecasts to management.
  • Market Intelligence: Gather competitor and market insights to inform strategy and tactical decisions for CBS UKI.

The Person Requirements:

  • Proven experience in selling power and heat generation solutions to public sector clients.
  • Expertise in decarbonization and Net Zero solutions, with knowledge of UK public sector targets and available funding.
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions through partnerships.
  • Strong skills in sales margin modelling and energy-efficient systems, with a track record in energy-saving project sales.
  • Familiarity with project financing and complex financial models.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with customers and stakeholders.
  • Initial understanding of CBS products and services.
  • Utilize consultative selling techniques to address customer needs and employ solid IT skills for data management and customer relationship systems.
  • Provide expert onsite generation strategies and effectively communicate complex concepts.
  • Think strategically to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Build strong internal relationships and influence management teams.
  • Network at the C-suite level to guide decision-making.
  • Clearly articulate energy-saving solutions and associated cost-benefit analyses.
  • Maintain a methodical, transparent work approach and meet deadlines.
  • Exhibit a high degree of commercial awareness and integrate diverse elements to deliver solutions.

At Centrica we embrace diversity and actively seek to attract individuals with unique backgrounds and perspectives. To build a more sustainable future, we need the best team – a team with a diverse mix of people and skills, where everyone feels welcome and able to succeed. We are dedicated in helping to close the diversity gap and would love to see more females, people of colour and LGBTQ+ employees, as well as those from a variety of cultures and ethnicity to veterans and the differently abled. Supporting diversity and inclusion is a big part of who we are, we are not looking for people to fit into our culture but to add to it!
